An Instrument Made of Light 2026 In this new project, Interspecifics shift their focus from the microscopic to the human scale, exploring how collective bodies organize and move in response to global urgencies. Using audio recordings of marches and demonstrations from around the world, the collective voice becomes the raw material for a kinetic light and sound instrument. An automated system transforms these protest recordings through spectral analysis into a living score of moving light, reflections, and quadraphonic sound. The result is a contemporary mantra where political memory, vibration, and light merge into a performative structure, reactivating protest as an energetic field that is constantly recomposed and reimagined. Material and technique: Audio recordings from global protests (sourced from open archives); spectral analysis; custom Max/MSP software; automated audio-selection system in python, moving spotlights; motors; crystal prisms and refractors; DMX lighting control with OLA; quadraphonic sound system; real-time resynthesis; and a spatialized audio-visual installation. Conceptualization, programing, system design and composition by: @interspecifics _ Paloma Lopez and Leslie García. Curatorial team: Sebastian Dürer and Dahlia Borsche Commissioned by the @daad_artists , @ctmfestival , @instrumentinventors for Echoes of the Tumult exhibition. All our gratitude and affection to everyone involved in the process. Pictures by Eunice Maurice

The morning of Day 3 of ENERGIES focused on Energies of Alarm / Atmospheric Occupation. It included a tour of an exhibition and presentations that explored how sound, frequency, atmosphere, and voice are entangled with power, trauma, and territorial control; and how energetic forms—whether legal, sonic, or spatial—construct and contest political realities. We began with a tour of Here on the Edge of the Sea We Sit by Ting-Jung Chen, followed by a conversation between the artist and Sebastian Dürer, who co-curated the exhibition with Natalie Keppler. Chen’s work posed such questions as: Does power whisper? How are territories communicated? Is there a sensory vision of collective identity? Her exhibition explored these themes, drawing on the echoes of public political speeches and monuments to examine how narratives, power, and identity are constructed, expressed, and contested across public and private spheres. The panel that followed featured Marina Peterson, Mhamad Safa, and Gascia Ouzounian, who explored the concepts of “frequency” (Peterson), “collateral listening” (Safa), and “atmospheric occupation” (Ouzounian). • Marina Peterson Frequency – instabilities of energetic forms • Mhamad Safa Collateral Listening and the Limits of International Law: Case of Gaza 2021 • Gascia Ouzounian City of Waves: Atmospheric Occupation in Beirut We are deeply grateful to Ting, Sebastian, Marina, and Mhamad for sharing this vital work, and to ENERGIES co-organizers and hosts Sebastian Dürer, Dahlia Borsche, and Brett Mommersteeg for all their support. For CHAN – which is the artist’s middle name, meaning “meditation” – Ibarra worked with poets Don Mee Choi and Logan February, with whom she shared a residency as part of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.
