For the next edition of Dub&Dal we celebrate the artistry and passion behind handbuilt soundsytems and community spaces. Presenting to you - Olga SoundSystem designed and built by John Broback @mitzi_ssd & friends. John has built a system that gives your body a thrill without hurting the ears & sounds as big as the space. I’ve tried to curate a musical journey that highlights the full range of the system’s character and style at one of my fav spaces. @90mil___ is more than an event space. It’s an urban regeneration project, a home for the arts, DIY culture and community building. This is ⁽ᴾᵒᵗᵉⁿᵗⁱᵃˡˡʸ⁾ their last summer, experience and support it before it’s gone for good. We’re raising funds for @lajeecenter and @1for3palestine - Grassroots Community Food and Healthcare in Palestinian Refugee Camps. Short films about Palestine curated by Solispiral @thespiraltimes will be playing all night. Continuing our quest for knowledge sharing, the evening will also feature a talk from the live performers, where they’ll break down their setups and open the floor to any questions (more info on slide 2 ➡️) Live performances & Talk by Modular percussionist @cinnapeyghamy (France) Multi-percussionist @rishiraj.kulkarni (India) Urdu poet and singer @sameerrahat (India) Live dub set by @o.m.theorem DJ sets by @thespiraltimes , @yeeah.lena b2b @lzmccan (Turkey) , @otto.vlott0 b2b @djstraightgirl , @rado1ne , fire closing by @matt_migz b2b @dub_isotope And lastly, homemade food by yours truly. Families and pets welcome until 22h. Good vibes only. Tell your friends and friends of friends, all tribes welcome 🌎

New amp in the works! What should I name it? It's a two channel high gain crusher built on chassis and transformers of an old Peavey. Still lots of refinement to be done with this very complex preamp, but it works

It's always really bothered me that guitar speakers have such poor directivity. They sound extremely bright in a narrow, on-axis beam and dull off to the side. This 2k to 3k peak is often 10bd or more above the off axis frequency response, meaning you never really know what you sound like in the mix, it's just too variable. There are a few "beam blocker" products on the market and on forums, but I've never found one that works. I decided to try this shape that I've been seeing on line arrays to improve coupling and it's by far the best option for making the off-axis tone sound similar to on-axis (the last slide is the modified cabinet) I still don't really understand well why this works, only a faint level of intuition. Can anyone explain it to me?

This is my take on the classic Altec A7 cabinet. Its tuned for deeper, more articulate bass with a modern pa driver. Built for an exhibition at IFA gallery in Berlin in September 2023 in collaboration with Listening at Pungwe. The aluminum horns are original 511e with a faitalpro compression driver

This is a sound system I built for @90mil___ with @jhjsummers and @boniface_____ in October 2023 It features my own design of midrange horn. The horn uses a single 15" driver and plays from 100 to 1000hz with very even 90 degree horizontal directivity. The measurement on the last slide got cropped funny by instagram but the fine lines are 1db increments and it averages about 103-105db 1w 1m in free space. Since this horn is not limited by the compromises that afflict many commercial pa mids (namely small mouth size and folded sound path) I managed to get it to sound very natural with no horn honk and very low harmonic distortion. Acoustic instruments sound incredibly realistic. It's almost too clean. I would have actually liked more emphasis in the kick register and I miss the forward feeling around 500-800 that I hear in shorter mid horns with higher compression. But overall it's not bad for a first prototype. The subs are Josh Ricci's SKRAM And the highs are altec Lansing 511 horns that we had modified to fit a 1.4" compression driver This thing sounds huge and effortless even in a huge room and it gets loud without being fatiguing

I just decided to make a few posts to summarize my sound system projects over the past few years. This is a rig I built at the DAAD Galerie in May 2023 with the help of @startedfromthebottomnowwequeer for Listening at Pungwe with Robert Machiri It's consists of 3 well know box designs with a few of my own twists: hog scoops for sub, mkb-230 for kick (cut in half and turned into a single 12" box, and a skeletal version of Marc O's mt130 for mid frequency
