Class of 2024, I love you. So many amazing people here & not pictured. I loved watching you all walk across the stage, you’re in my heart & on my wall of fame forever. Rooting for you 💙🐝
PUBLIC SCHOOL KIDS ✨☄️
If you’ve heard me go off before you might know I think public schools are the most important, beautiful places on Earth. We celebrated the beauty of our students with a “Personal Style” photo shoot by the absolutely insanely good @itsjillianclark , thank you forever.
I’m going to fight my whole life for this 👆
The new Hillside Outdoors x Bike Durham x Durham Bike Co-Op Collab
We had a great biking class with @bikedurham ! Students learned how to ride and got a bike, helmet, light, lock, and safety vest thanks to the awesome @durhambikecoop . We’re so lucky our campus connects to the American Tobacco Trail — two students were able to ride their new bikes home on the greenway. I’m celebrating new access to affordable and green transportation tonight. 🌱 🚵🏾♂️ 🤲
That’s a wrap on Quarter 1! 🎬
I have really enjoyed a new group of students, shout out to those who #followme you’re my favorites ❤️
This Quarter I experimented a lot with new tools to make social studies more hands on… so legos, expo markers, watercolors, wipebooks and gummy bears all made an appearance 😂
Looking forward to our podcast unit, a fresh gradebook, and more time with my students 💞
New merch just dropped! 🤩 A hornet pollinating a dogwood flower (NC State Tree) to symbolize our students exploring the natural world. Support what we’re doing by ordering some Hillside Outdoors Merch by Friday, 10/13. Link & more info in bio 🌞 All design done by the amazing @weirdpeanut
First Hillside Outdoors Club with @froghollowoutdoors was a huge success! Loved seeing everyone enjoying themselves out on the water. Our next trip is October 21st 💓
Traveling with a group of 45 public school teachers was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before, in the most beautiful way. Teaching can be an exhausting, isolating, and demoralizing profession. We are the first responders to the consequences of the violence of structural racism and capitalism in our society. There were times last year where I felt low and hopeless, despite knowing education is my passion.
On this program, every person felt deeply for kids. Everyone wants a better world. Everyone sacrifices. Everyone is dedicated to being lifelong learners. Everyone can let loose and be silly & joyful. I didn’t know how much I needed to be surrounded by this kind of energy.
The visits our group loved the most were to schools. We all lit up and were drawn to connecting with the kids. Xavier hung back from tours to get a quick conversation in with the students. Chris went crazy on the freeze tag court. Ashley gave away all her pennies so they could see American money. Keegan held his hand up (he’s tall) as the kids took turns jumping to try to high five him. And I was right there with them as I slid closer to a 2nd grader to ask them what their favorite color is while we were supposed to be listening to an adult.
Public education in North Carolina is under attack. So, connecting with and learning from the people who are on my team, our team who cherishes and fights for ALL children, gave my life strength and affirmed my direction. Thank you 💜 #globalteacherschile2023
