When we took these photos, @phyllis.iller asked me about my intentions for the year. I had to think hard because I didnāt want to just list a bunch of things I want to accomplish; I wanted to outline ways I could fundamentally shift how Iām showing up in the world, because thatās really where I am these days. Hereās what I said:
Iām shifting out of resistance mode, from a constant state of reacting, pushing, and surviving, and into world-building. Iām laying the foundation for a life rooted in optimism because hope is now an imperative for my well-being.
I want to be more deeply grounded in creative and cultural spaces that feel alive and connected. I want to contribute work thatās thoughtful, accessible, and genuinely dope. Iām tired of hovering on the margins. I want in.
Iām a creative, a corporate girly, a muva, a wife, a childbirth educator, a scholarāand itās increasingly important that Iām fanning the flames of all of the above.
I was a fan of @asherald before seeing this exhibit, but she managed to absolutely blow my mind with American Sublime. I was legit awe-struck by some of the pieces. Pictures and video do them no justice. You MUST see the beauty of these works in person. Catch it at the @highmuseumofart before itās too late.
So honored to have been chosen for @phyllis.iller ās curatorial debut with the HELD: Black Women and the Womb group exhibition.
My piece is in direct conversation with Lucille Cliftonās āpoem to my uterus.ā The words you see are mine, hand-stitched around a portrait of the poet herself. Though I have not faced a hysterectomy, I know many women who have had to grieve a part of them that held multitudes. This is for them. Itāll be on view at the Nina Baldwin Gallery until June 6th.
To Lucille
uterus where can i go
without you
where can you go without me
you who have housed
life and death
in the same
dark room/ womb
in absence know
I am still here
standing in the light
of everything
you taught me

#Ad #OlayPartner Some things your mom teaches with words, some she teaches just by how she carries herself. š
The older I get, the more I understand those quiet lessons and why #MomYouWereRight. Having @olay Super Serum as part of how I consistently care for myself feels like a small reminder of the wisdom (and routines) that get passed down.
Homage to the great @dapperdanharlem . When @willfordjunior got the idea for these pieces, we knew we wanted to make the moment bigger by dressing the babies in Dapper Dan inspired outfits. I did what I could do, but my struggle to make these fits proved why heās often imitated, never duplicated š
Not pictured: me on the sideline fighting for my life to get the babies to focus for 2 seconds
