More photographs for @another_man from the Cumberland Plateau, a vast, flat-topped upland where, over millions of years, water has carved through sandstone and limestone to create a magical world of dramatic gorges, sinkholes, and hidden caves. I live on the Cumberland Plateau, a vast, flat-topped upland where, over millions of years, water has carved through sandstone and limestone to create a magical world of dramatic gorges, sinkholes, and hidden caves. This landscape forms the backdrop to a story for the latest issue of @another_man . Deep gratitude to @nickhaymes and the incredible creative team who helped bring this vision to life. I had a transformative experience on assignment for @theatlantic spending time with Lightning strike survivors. I was surprised by how difficult it was for this group of people to find doctors who understood their medical needs and believed their symptoms, which manifest as both physical and psychological. “Few systematic studies have been conducted, and most physicians have never treated a strike victim. Many survivors’ experiences defy medical explanation, so doctors have little to say.” “How does it feel, when you’re trying to describe the most transformative experience of your life, to be met, routinely, with disbelief?” I relied on the camera as a witness to confirm and affirm the suffering of this group of people who were brave enough to spend three days together offering support and advice that their doctors could not. Thanks to my editor, @lucymurraywillis , assistant @landonjedwards writer Jacob Stern, and everyone at Lightning Strike and Electrical Shock Survivors International, for allowing me to document their annual gathering.

This week, a new exhibition of work by @raythompsonjrphoto , Earl Dotter, and me opened to the public at @wvminewars in Matewan, West Virginia. ENTIRELY PREVENTABLE The Toxic Legacy of Silica Dust from Hawks Nest to Black Lung   Through the lenses of three photographers, we trace a 100-year trajectory of a disease that, as the title states, is entirely preventable. While the deadly effects of silica dust have been known for nearly a century, coal miners in Central Appalachia are currently facing a resurgence of the most severe form of black lung at rates never seen before. I am grateful to the @centercontemporarydoc and the wonderful team at the museum (specifically the incredible @mulchthief ) for helping me realize this project and to Raymond and Earl for trusting me with their work. The show is on view through November 2026.

Last week I joined @ksurana @cassandrajaramillo and @dizzymrslizzie along with our incredible editors to celebrate the Pulitzer Prize in public service for our reporting on post roe America. It was an incredible evening. i was last to make it to the stage and the presenter awkwardly handed me a box with a gold medal inside. They give out just one of these each year. it is singularly awarded to the journalists honored with the Public Service prize. Before handing it over to ProPublica (who are the official recipients of the medal for providing the resources for the reporting project) I decided to take a moment to make sure it was not chocolate wrapped in gold foil. Fortunately we did not go home empty handed. All the winners got blue boxes with a weapon like crystal object inside engraved with Joseph Pulitzers head onto it. I keep it underneath my bed in case of intruder but you can see it here in my debut unboxing video. It was truly such a special evening. Thanks to everyone who spent time with our stories.

I traveled across Kentucky after Charlie Kirk’s death to spend time with Transgender Americans facing escalating threats and hostility. In red states where rights are being stripped away, conservative rhetoric continues to frame “trans” as an ideology and danger —fueling fear and violence. Amid this hostility, I was deeply moved by the grace, compassion, and clarity of those I met during such a dark political moment. Thank you to @lemondefr for making space for this story.

@lemondefr asked me to talk about my experience at the Charlie Kirk memorial service. Mostly I talk about how I will never forget that moment when Erika Kirk stood before everyone and forgave the man who murdered her husband. It sent chills through my body. It was such a bold rebuke of Trump’s obsession with vengeance.

Because we are living in such a fractured political moment, I sometimes forget about joy - In this case the kind of joy one gets from standing alongside a crowd at the West Virginia State Fair, singing along as @zachtop and his band play all my favorite songs from his last album. I have a soft spot for all country music but right now I’m deep in “the ’90s Honky Tonk Heroics of Zach Top” Thank you to @nytimes and @amandaboe for sending me to photograph Zach. I loved chasing after Zach’s Spaniel, Otis backstage, and making portraits to celebrate the new album, which I promise will ease the pain of even the most dire news cycle.

Exploiting the working poor isn’t an accident—it’s a business model, an industry of cruelty, the bitter logic of capitalism laid bare. Reporter Adam Friedman, in partnership with @propublica and the @tennessee_lookout investigates Flex Loans: a financial trap designed to keep people borrowing from their own debt. Each “minimum payment” feeds the cycle, forcing borrowers to take out new loans just to cover the last one. In my small town, the only 24-hour business besides the gas station is an Advance Financial storefront. This company has ensnared more than 100,000 Tennesseans into loans carrying an interest rate of 279.5%. I’m grateful to @pdicampo for sending me across Tennessee to make portraits of victims and lawyers standing up to predatory lending and to ProPublica for funding work that exposes abuses of power.
