💃🏻 FREE WORKSHOP: Raving through Artworks in M(M)A Date: Thursday, May 28, 12 to 2 pm Location: Togo Salmon Hall Room 118 Register with link in bio 🔗 When we enter a rave, a museum, or any space that calls us to feel and move—do we feel courageous enough to participate? What draws us onto and into the space? If kinship is the “mutuality of being,” how might we cultivate it within ourselves, with others, with music and artworks? Drawing on works from the McMaster Museum of Art collection, Hamilton-based DJ, radio host, and cultural programmer Jeff Chow (DJ alias Dunaway @squat_here ) presents a lecture that situates modern rave culture within multiple cultural perspectives. The talk explores rave spaces as intersectional sites of movement, community, and belonging. As rave culture becomes increasingly commercialized and absorbed into consumerist formats, the lecture reflects on artworks from M(M)A’s collection and recent acquisitions to consider how dance, movement, and community have been represented across time, geography, and culture. Following the lecture, Allie Blumas will lead a light-hearted, one-hour guided movement workshop exploring how kinship can be built on the dancefloor. Participants will be invited to experiment with ways of moving together, building confidence, and engaging in shared dance spaces. Through guided exercises, participants will develop greater spatial awareness and sensitivity to those around them. How can we “play” together without physical contact? How might we build confidence on the dancefloor while navigating our own expectations? This event is open for McMaster community, students, and general public. No experience needed. Light refreshments are provided.

Just one week out from JUNOS weekend @thejunoawards — we can’t wait to see you at the unofficial after party. Come through. We’re highlighting clips from Cadence Weapon’s DJ sets at Rifflandia @rifflandia (slides 1–3) and @shiftradio.live (slides 4–5) — expect a groovy dancefloor with undeniable local charm. COME-THRU-905: Cadence Weapon, Dunaway, DJ Smooth Transitions Sunday, March 29, 10pm to 3am @nthenyou_ 145 Main St. East, Hamilton $10 Early Bird Sold Out / $15 GA / $20 Door — tickets now on Resident Advisor, link in bio Cadence Weapon >>>>> A Renaissance man for the Digital Age, Cadence Weapon is a rapper, producer, DJ, and author with a list of accomplishments and credits so long — from receiving industry accolades for his music to earning awards for critiquing that same industry in his writing — you might wonder what more there is for him to do. Even so, Fall 2025 finds the Polaris Music Prize winner with a new frame of mind and yet more on the go. On the dancefloor, Cadence Weapon fuses his hip-hop lyricism, musical nerdiness, and deep dig-otry with undeniable and (un)shakeable groove. His upcoming book, Ways of Listening, reflects his own music discovery process for the contemporary music lover, in the age of digital streaming and algorithmic systems.

Waacking 101 with Jacqui Oakley @jacqui_oakley 📍 Revival Art Store (@therevivalartstore ) 1165 Cannon St E, Hamilton March 22 🕒 3 PM – 5 PM 🎟 $15 tickets — link in bio 🔗 (Not making any profit — just covering rental costs!) We have set aside some free spots for QBIPOC folks, DM to claim. Wear comfortable clothes and footwear; bring a water bottle. With bold movements, exaggerated poses, and strong musicality, Waacking — evolving from “Punking” — is a dance style that has carved out a unique place in the world of dance, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. Originating in 1970s LA gay disco clubs, Waacking provided a platform for gay men of colour to express themselves amidst societal oppression, transforming pain into empowerment and authenticity. Influenced by Golden Age Hollywood icons, martial arts films, and the emotional, high-energy nature of disco music, the dance is all about expression. Over the decades, Waacking has evolved, influencing other sub-genres of street dance as well as sister styles such as voguing. Dancers interpret the beat and lyrics of the music through dramatic arm movements, often punctuated by theatrical poses. The name “Waacking” is derived from the onomatopoeia “whack” — a comic book–like reference to the sharp, striking movements of the arms and hands, often performed in sync with the music. The dance celebrates storytelling, self-expression, and individuality. This all-ages workshop is catered to beginners and those who are movement- or dance-curious. No experience needed. Come as you are, and come with an open heart. The goal is to learn the ingredients and encourage you to dish it out yourself — big or small, quiet or bold, silly or serious. Encourage movement. Encourage each other. The class will be held in Revival Art Store’s event space, where we’ll also have plenty of time to connect and dance freely to disco, funk, and house. Before or after the workshop, pop next door for coffee and treats available for purchase at the café. No one will be turned away for financial reasons. If cost is a barrier, feel free to DM me on Instagram @squat_here . For questions about the workshop, you can also DM @jacquioakley
