In sociology, the third place/space refers to the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place"). Examples of third places include churches, cafes, bars, clubs, community centres, public libraries, gyms, bookstores, makerspaces, stoops, parks, theaters, and opera houses, among others.** It's important to note that, yes, screen addiction is a real issue for a lot of people, and heavy phone usage can negatively impact you. And because of how society is structured, digital spaces may be the main option for you, especially if you are disabled. A lot of Americans live in isolated neighborhoods, that are only accessible by car, in cities that continue to purge community spaces to make space for generic department stores. And now the current conversation seems to center around smart phones melting the brains of kids when the adults, community leaders and business owners have taken all viable spaces away from them, where do you expect them to go? Outside of libraries, which are also under attack by conservatives, public pools, malls, rec centers, etc. are all relics of the past. Local music venues are closing or being bought out by national conglomerates that are looking to extract from our communities, but folks are putting the onus on a younger generation that's attempting to navigate a social landscape that is extremely antagonistic to them. You can complain about smartphone Fortnite skibidi toilet whatever all you want, but at the end of the day this isolation and depression is a core function of capitalism. We are responsible for making space for the youth in our communities by rejecting reactionary narratives about their development, and maintaining/protecting the spaces for them.
