Hip-Hop Cypher Pedagogy cultivates some of the most transformative intergenerational learning environments.
The cypher shifts learning away from perfection and toward participation. Everyone contributes. Everyone witnesses growth. Everyone holds the rhythm together. Everyone grows together. It is deeply communal. (And it is also nerve-racking and anticipatory, lol)
There are countless hip-hop artists, scholars, and evidence-based practices that demonstrate the highest depths of knowledge, wisdom, and learning cultivated through the cypher.
This week
@spunbysun modeled a powerful call-and-response scratch DJ hip-hop cypher approach built around a 4 count on, 4 count off combo scratch.
What emerged was collaborative, embodied learning in real time. Rhythm, counting, timing, pattern recognition, listening, improvisation, focus, muscle memory and more all working together through practice and participation.
It was experiential, learner-centered, culturally rooted, and deeply alive. (All of the things educational environments strive to obtain for learners and often times don’t)
As an artist, learner & instructor, I’m constantly moved and by the ways in which hip-hop exemplifies genius.
