Forever a student of the craft.
Today I got to go back to the fundamentals and put hands on wax. We covered foundational scratches and went fully analog, tapping into the roots of the craft.
Grateful to learn from Scratch Academy ( @scratchnyc ) alum DJ Rampage Global ( @djrampageglobal ), who’s rocked stages with my favorite musical pioneers like Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, the Marley Brothers & more. To study under someone who carries that lineage and still honors the craft is a reminder that pratice makes precision.
We also took time to reflect on the purpose behind Scratch DJ Academy, ( @scratchdjacademy ) founded by Jam Master Jay of RUN DMC to break down barriers and make DJ culture accessible to the next generation. It was the first of its kind in the world and is still going strong today.

Scenes from our workshop for @redbullbatalla led by @1marvelito . Scratch Academy invited @hellotones “El Hijo de PueblaYork,” a Bronx-born DJ championing the sounds of the Latin-American dance genre Cumbia, to share his story and breakdown his signature mixing style “Kumbias Mezcladas!”
The workshop instructed a select group of Latin influencers with foundational basics on beat matching and scratching, practicing over a curated selection of Cumbias from hellotones. Scratch Academy NY was proud to host this historic one-of-a-kind workshop spotlighting the evolving sounds of Cumbia as it thrives in New York City and beyond! @redbullbatalla@scratchdjacademy
Today we kicked off @scratchnyc Unit 3: Intermediate Scratching with DJ Sun @spunbysun & @dspliff139 and got right back to the fundamentals that make the art form what it is. We took time to set up the needle, slow down, listen closely, and tap into it the process behind the sound.
We watched the Scratch documentary and reflected on the culture, lineage, and innovation that shaped turntablism into a global movement. And reviewed foundational scratches, worked through call and response exercises, and spent time building our technique through both individual and group practice.
One thing I’m continuing to appreciate about this journey is how scratching teaches you to listen differently. Precise presentness. Intentional mindfulness. Not just to music, but to space, people, texture, timing, and each other.
Grateful for @scratchdjacademy & how it continues to carry DJ culture forward and for spaces that allow us to learn hands on, make mistakes, build muscle memory, and grow together.

Scratch DJ Academy Brooklyn is hosting DJ Spectakulah’s Turntablism Master class. Fully geared towards seasoned turntablists, this two day master class will focus on advanced scratch combos, beat juggling patterns and routine building.
With over two decades of experience, DJ Spectakulah is a world-class turntablist, producer, and educator recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to DJ culture. His career launched in the late ‘90s with competitive accolades, including becoming a 1998 New York City DMC Regional Finalist, 1999 Philadelphia DMC Champion, and USA DMC Runner-Up. He was also a member of the 1999 ITF Western Hemisphere Team Champions, competing globally at the ITF World Team Championships.
