It was an honour to bring the poetry of @caribou.barbie to life this week, make my impromptu compositional debut, and be part of such an incredible triptych of brilliantly creative new Canadian operas. We had such a beautiful time in Vienna performing the Shoah Songbook at @ehrbarsaal.wien and diving into meaningful work with ExilArte’s incredible collections. We’re especially excited to bring music by Erich Zeisl and Egon Lustgarten into our work. Thank you to the ExilArte team for introducing us to these remarkable composers.

I was way up in the frozen Yukon presenting recitals and school shows with @danzrae and @jeremyscinocca.tenor with thanks to @yukonarts and @edmontonopera . Right after, I jetted off to Germany, Ireland, and Austria with @jaclyngrossman and had the great privilege of researching and presenting music from the Shoah Songbook (music of Jewish composers from the Holocaust). On Wednesday evening, we had the privilege of experiencing the program “The Shoah Songbook – Music of Remembrance” with soprano Jaclyn Grossman and pianist Spencer Kryzanowski. During a one-hour concert followed by a conversation with host Sapir von Abel, the audience gained a powerful glimpse into musical works written by Jewish composers during the Shoah. For six years, the Likht Ensemble – founded by Jaclyn Grossman and Nate Ben-Horin – has been researching music created in camps and ghettos. Their mission is to reclaim this history, honor the composers and their legacy, and explore new forms of remembrance culture. Their work brings forgotten manuscripts back into the light and pays tribute to the craftsmanship of Jewish artists persecuted by the Nazi regime. In an exclusive collaboration with ausARTen – Perspektivwechsel durch Kunst and the Münchner Kammerspiele, Jaclyn and Spencer—who stepped in for Nate that evening—created a truly unique experience. From the haunting lullabies of Ilse Weber, to German songs by Edwin Geist, and on to klezmer and Yiddish tango, the performance moved between tenderness, pain and resilience. The insights and historical context shared during and after the concert made the evening deeply meaningful and opened space for reflection on our contemporary culture of remembrance. This week I had the huge pleasure of workshopping “Fall River: The Legend of Lizzie Borden” - a brand new opera with music by @ceciliacomposer and libretto by Michael Albano at @uoftopera with a great crew of talented students!
