Celebrating International Nurses Day 2026
“Our nurses. Our future. Empowered nurses save lives” 🏥🤝
SPC acknowledges the vital contribution nurses make to strengthening Pacific health systems. SPC is honoured to be the Secretariat of the Pacific Heads of Nursing and Midwifery (PHoNM), the key regional forum that empowers the Pacific nursing and midwifery workforce by bringing together senior leaders to collaborate, share expertise, and advance the priorities that shape and elevate the profession across the region.
At the 6th PHoNM in April this year the Heads of Nursing and Midwifery endorsed the establishment of a Pacific Nursing and Midwifery Education Advisory Group (PNMEAG). The PNMEAG exists as a subgroup of the PHoNM and consists of heads of nursing and midwifery schools in the region. The aim of the group is to strengthen nursing and midwifery education in the region.
“Over recent years, the PHoNM has grown into a strong regional leadership platform that unites nursing and midwifery leaders across the Pacific. Through collaboration, shared knowledge, and strong regional partnerships, PHoNM continues to strengthen leadership, nursing standards, workforce development, and health policy across our region. Most importantly, it empowers Pacific nurses and midwives with a unified voice to support stronger health systems and improve health outcomes for our people and communities”. PRETMM 6 concluded with a clear message from the region: Pacific solutions must move from ambition into action.
With 64% of Pacific people still living without power and 100% of our transport system still dependent on fossil fuels, ministers reinforced the need for practical action that reflects the realities facing Pacific countries and communities.
The Manubada Call to Action highlights the importance of scaling renewable energy, strengthening energy security, improving maritime transport systems, and better coordinating financing and partnerships to support Pacific priorities.
These outcomes now help carry the region’s priorities towards COP31, where the Pacific will continue calling for support that backs locally led solutions and delivers real, measurable benefits for Pacific people.

🗣️ "Strengthening risk understanding is central to building resilience, particularly as climate and disaster impacts intensify across the Pacific", explained SPC's George Beck, during the Fiji validation of a new national Risk Profiling Methodology: a shared framework that will guide how disaster risk is understood, planned for, and acted on across the country.
More than 80 representatives from government, civil society, and development partners came together in Suva to shape and test this approach using real-world scenarios. European Union (EU) First Counsellor Carine Hanssens said the approach will support more transparent and inclusive risk management, improve access to information, and ensure that vulnerable groups are better considered in planning processes.
🤝 The methodology has been co-developed by the NDRMO with technical and financial support from SPC through the European Union-funded Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific Phase II project. Findings from the validation and pilot will inform final revisions before the methodology is endorsed and rolled out.

Across the Pacific, maritime transport plays a vital role in connecting people, communities and economies.
The Pacific One Maritime Framework, endorsed by Ministers at the 6th Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers’ Meeting (PRETMM 6) in Papua New Guinea, provides a shared regional direction for maritime transport across Pacific Island Countries and Territories.
Aligned with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, the Framework supports a safer, more resilient and better connected maritime sector, guided by Pacific priorities.
As the region responds to climate change, rising costs, infrastructure pressures and connectivity challenges, the Framework helps strengthen coordinated action for the future of maritime transport in the Blue Pacific.

📸 A look back at the 18th Heads of Fisheries Meeting in Nouméa, which concluded last Friday after bringing together members of the Pacific Communityto discuss fisheries and aquaculture in the Pacific.
Over five days, Pacific Island countries and territories shared their priorities, reviewed the latest scientific data and analysed the implications of changing ocean conditions on fisheries systems.
🐠🌺 For the first time, the meeting dedicated an entire day to climate change, including the First Pacific strategy for climate change and coastal fisheries and aquaculture being pre-endorsed. National adaptations to climate change were also highlighted through the Pacific Fisheries & Climate book (link in the bio).
👥 These discussions helped to define more clearly how countries will strengthen fisheries management, safeguard food security and respond to the changes already being observed across the region.

Across island countries, maritime transport is a lifeline, moving food, fuel, and essential goods between communities. But these systems rely heavily on stable and affordable energy. From fuel availability to port infrastructure, energy shapes how reliable and costly shipping can be.
This is why conversations at the 6th Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers Meeting (PRETMM 6) happening in Papua New Guinea go beyond sectors.
They focus on how to strengthen the systems that keep the region connected, ensuring transport remains reliable, energy remains accessible, and communities remain supported.

The opening marks the start of high-level discussions under the theme “Scaling Connectivity for a Prosperous Blue Pacific.” Ministers will focus on:
✅ moving from policy direction to implementation,
✅ including strengthening energy security,
✅ improving maritime and transport connectivity, and
✅ identifying practical pathways for regional cooperation and investment.
In his opening remarks, the Honorable James Marape, Prime Minister of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, highlighted the importance of Pacific unity and collective action.
