CodeMoves explores the use of AI tools within the choreographic process. Over the past 18 months, The Movement Project, led by TMP associate director Elyse Morckel, together with core collaborators Lauren Bedal (Los Angeles, CA) and Miryam Gabrielle (Detroit, MI), has been investigating how AI technologies can support and expand choreographic practice. Through ongoing exploration, experimentation, ideation, and questioning, the team has examined how these tools can both enhance existing creative processes and open new possibilities for movement based artists. Join us June 6th in Akron, Ohio and June 11th in Detroit, Michigan for an evening of new works by Miryam Gabrielle and Elyse Morckel, alongside a lecture demonstration with Lauren Bedal and core collaborators on how AI tools can support the choreographic process. The Movement Project was selected as a 2024 Knight New Work grantee, an initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that supports artists and organizations in Akron, Miami, and Detroit who are using technology to innovate how art is created, shared, and experienced. Special thanks to: Collaborators: Megan Gargano, Administrative Lead, Violet Whitney & William Martin, Co-founders of Spatial Pixel, and Varsha Iyengar, Movement Practitioner and Creative Technologist. The Dancers: Madison Burris, Emmaline Devore, Kailey Fraer, Alexandria Davis, and Michael Manson Jr. Additional Collaborators: Black Valve Media, Lady Red Photography, and Giuseppe Defilippis Additional supporters: Andy Arts Center, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, NCCAkron, Rubber City Theatre, The University of Akron Arts Academy, and School of Visual Arts AI models used in conjunction with this project include: OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and Archetype AI’s Newton. Tomorrow! Join us in the ixD studio for ✨ Spatial AI & UX: Computing Beyond Screens✨ a talk with the incredible @spatialpixel team, Violet Whitney and William Martin 🌐 Join us in person (or remotely)! RSVP at the Eventbrite link at the Linktree in bio. #SpatialComputing is often seen as an interaction that occurs on an individual’s screen, such as with smart glasses or an augmented reality device. ➡️ However, some of the most intuitive interactions leverage mixed reality and spatial awareness in the physical world, enabling more collective, social, and embodied interactions in our environments. #AI #spatialcomputing #interactiondesign

As our Summer Fellows Naomi & Sena get the Spatial Pixel Lab ready for the next semester, here’s a little something they made for the incoming MFA IxD class of 2027 🫶 “Using hand-tracked shapes that detect the language we’re speaking and translate it in real time. Hindi, Korean, English — no barriers, just good energy and better collaboration. To the new class of 2027: we can’t wait to meet you 💛” – Naomi and Sena #spatialcomputing #svaixd #interactiondesign #schoolofvisualarts #spatialpixel

A hand-tracking experiment where simple shapes make big sounds 🔊 No instruments, no settings, just gestures. Built as part of a longer tutorial for the Spatial Pixel lab at ixD, it’s our way of saying: jump in, play around, and let the pixels do the rest. 💥 This is just the beginning. The lab’s buzzing with wild ideas and we’re only getting started! 🧪✨ –Seeun Park and Naomi Shah, @spatialpixel Summer Fellows. This summer, Naomi and Seeun are working collaboratively with the Spatial Pixel team in their lab at ixD, exploring their innovative spatial computing tools and creating tutorials for using this technology. #spatialcomputing #spatialpixel #svaixd #interactiondesign #mfainteractiondesign

A spark (or two) that’s getting us excited. In one of our early experiments at the Spatial Pixel Lab @ MFA Interaction Design Studio, we played with hand tracking and gestural input. Touching the index finger to the thumb triggers a flame, and the longer they stay connected, the bigger the fire grows. 🔥🔥 –Sena Park and Naomi Shah, @spatialpixel Summer Fellows. This summer, Naomi and Sena are working collaboratively with the Spatial Pixel team in their lab at ixD, exploring their innovative spatial computing tools and creating tutorials for using this technology. Stay tuned for more updates from this dynamic duo through the summer ☀️ #spatialcomputing #spatialpixel #svaixd #interactiondesign #mfainteractiondesign

Say hello to the @spatialpixel summer fellows: ixD students Naomi Shah and Sena Park (class of 2026)! ☀️ This summer, Naomi and Sena will be working collaboratively with the Spatial Pixel team in their lab at ixD and opening up this innovative and interactive space to the SVA community and beyond. The duo will be creating onboarding videos and tutorials for using this AI-powered spacial computing technology. They will also be creating some exciting projects of their own in the lab. Watch this space throughout the summer to see what they create ✨ Interested in visiting the lab or collaborating➡️ Message us here or at [email protected]! #spatialcomputing #interactiondesign #ai #spatialpixel #mfainteractiondesign #svaixd

Last Friday, our collaborators at @spatialpixel –Violet Whitney and William Martin–opened their new programmable space to the public. This experimental environment—located inside the ixD studio—is dedicated to reimagining human-computer interaction beyond the confines of a screen. ✨🌐 The lab serves as a dynamic testing ground for multimodal AI, exploring how technology can support more playful and expressive ways of working. At its heart, the Lab is driven by a mission to deepen human-to-human connection—not just human-computer interaction. Thank you to everyone who attended and made the opening of this innovative new resource so memorable! Curious about this tech and want to learn more? Register for Spatial Pixel’s summer intensive workshop, SOFT MACHINES, HARD SPACES: AI, interfaces, and the built environment ➡️ at the Linktree in our bio! #svaixd #svanyc #spatialcomputing #AI #spatialpixel

TONIGHT! Join us in the ixD studio from 6-8 pm as we open the Spatial Pixel Lab—an experimental research environment for exploring human-computer interactions beyond the screen. @spatialpixel This ongoing collaboration invites designers to prototype new forms of interaction using voice, movement, and spatial computing, as you can see in these videos taken during our thesis exhibition. This innovative space serves as a testing ground for multimodal AI and its role in shaping more natural, embodied ways of working with technology. At its core, the Lab explores how technologies can strengthen human-to-human connection—not just human-computer interaction. Come join us, and find out how you can get involved in the Spatial Pixel Lab! Spatial Pixel is looking for collaborators! This event is free and open to the public. RSVP at the Linktree in bio! #spatialpixel #svaixd #interactiondesign #AI #spatialcomputing #svanyc

Meet Violet Whitney: one of our new faculty members for Spring 2025. ✨ Violet is the co-founder of Spatial Pixel: a research and design studio building a new kind of spatial computing that aims to “empower people with digital and spatial agency,” turning attention away from screen and enhancing real-world experiences. Violet and her Spatial Pixel co-founder, William Martin, previously visited the ixD studio for a hands-on spatial computing workshop (check out slide 2 for a glimpse), and now she’s back to teach Mixed Realities—a course where students will explore the intersection of location, proximity, scale, and social contexts in design, using tools like Procession to bring their ideas to life. #VioletWhitney #SVA #ixD #MFAInteractionDesign #SpatialComputing #SchoolOfVisualArts
