CodeMoves explores the use of AI tools within the choreographic process. Over the past 18 months, The Movement Project, led by TMP associate director Elyse Morckel, together with core collaborators Lauren Bedal (Los Angeles, CA) and Miryam Gabrielle (Detroit, MI), has been investigating how AI technologies can support and expand choreographic practice. Through ongoing exploration, experimentation, ideation, and questioning, the team has examined how these tools can both enhance existing creative processes and open new possibilities for movement based artists. Join us June 6th in Akron, Ohio and June 11th in Detroit, Michigan for an evening of new works by Miryam Gabrielle and Elyse Morckel, alongside a lecture demonstration with Lauren Bedal and core collaborators on how AI tools can support the choreographic process. The Movement Project was selected as a 2024 Knight New Work grantee, an initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that supports artists and organizations in Akron, Miami, and Detroit who are using technology to innovate how art is created, shared, and experienced. Special thanks to: Collaborators: Megan Gargano, Administrative Lead, Violet Whitney & William Martin, Co-founders of Spatial Pixel, and Varsha Iyengar, Movement Practitioner and Creative Technologist. The Dancers: Madison Burris, Emmaline Devore, Kailey Fraer, Alexandria Davis, and Michael Manson Jr. Additional Collaborators: Black Valve Media, Lady Red Photography, and Giuseppe Defilippis Additional supporters: Andy Arts Center, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, NCCAkron, Rubber City Theatre, The University of Akron Arts Academy, and School of Visual Arts AI models used in conjunction with this project include: OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and Archetype AI’s Newton. We imagined what scientific instruments would look like in an alternative future where people could send messages into the heavens through: speech, touch, movement, and sight. These interactive sculptures let visitors at the Ministry of Awe “communicate with the heavens,” changing a mural of the heavens through their interactions. Historically, many important new technologies begin as strange, unclear, even slightly excessive objects. We’re at a great moment for technologists and creatives to explore new forms for technologies. Technologies that... invite exploration over efficiency use the body over a keyboard are collective over individual

The future of spatial computing might look a lot more like choreography than coding. Spatial Pixel is working with dancers to put AI tools in the hands of dance artists. As part of a Knight Foundation grant The Movement Project is bringing together artists and technologists to create accessible digital tools for dance artists. It’s a collaboration between The Movement Project (Ohio), choreographer and educator dedicated to Black liberation practices Miryam G. Johnson (Detroit), and designer and human-computer interaction expert Lauren Bedal (LA). During my last workshop with Miryam, she showed us that sometimes the most natural way to communicate a move is to show rather than tell. Choreographers don’t say— “Step forward, angle your body 20 degrees, raise your arm 6 inches above the head…” They just show it: “we move across the stage like THIS”. We wonder, what else should spatial computing learn from dance? @l.bedal @themovementproject @meegmeega @eamorck @lirzz @varsha177

Just a typical weekend at The Heavens at @moaphilly . We designed and built this to be a unique place to interact, hopefully with peeps you don’t yet know! An #interactive #mural turned social medium. #ai #projectionmapping #spatial

Thank you @jetscott for this lovely CNET story on Spatial Pixel and our work at the @moaphilly ! We got a chance to talk about using AI for screenless interactions that keep people present with each other. #interactive #ai #cnet #spatialcomputing /watch?v=-hT4OAnRN_Y&t=53s

Tomorrow! Join us in the ixD studio for ✨ Spatial AI & UX: Computing Beyond Screens✨ a talk with the incredible @spatialpixel team, Violet Whitney and William Martin 🌐 Join us in person (or remotely)! RSVP at the Eventbrite link at the Linktree in bio. #SpatialComputing is often seen as an interaction that occurs on an individual’s screen, such as with smart glasses or an augmented reality device. ➡️ However, some of the most intuitive interactions leverage mixed reality and spatial awareness in the physical world, enabling more collective, social, and embodied interactions in our environments. #AI #spatialcomputing #interactiondesign

Close-up of the “touch rosette” in The Heavens at @moaphilly you can tap to change up the experience of the entire space and get a satisfying “boom.” We wanted to give visitors a simple way to interact with the architecture that wasn’t necessarily a mechanical device. #interactive #mural

Violet programming the “snow sketch” to accumulate on the mural’s objects. But why is she wearing a coat? And how do you trigger the snow mode?!? You’ll have to visit @moaphilly to find out! #interactive #interactiveart #ai #mural #philadelphia

The star constellation sketch of The Heavens in the Ministry of Awe. One of several interactive experiences we created and that account holders may reveal with Meg Saligman’s painted mural. This bank of humanity holds the stories of account holders as the constellations store humanity’s values and dreams. @moaphilly @megsaligmanstudio

We’re super excited to be able to tell you about our newest work, an immersive interactive exhibit for @moaphilly in collaboration with @megsaligmanstudio . It’s a space called “The Heavens,” centered around one of Meg Saligman’s murals (a real, physical mural), which we have brought to life with concept design, projection mapping, sensors, hardware design, AI, and a natural language interface approach to facilitating collective tangible interactions among Ministry of Awe “account holders” (aka visitors) over time. And yes, it uses Procession! Much to unpack here; stay tuned for more posts as we show you what we’ve designed and how we’ve done it. @moaphilly opened March 14th and tickets are at /! #interactive #exhibition #ai
