Building Beyond Cycle 3 | Mentorship
For the past 3 years I have had the pleasure of working as a mentor in the Building Beyond Programme initiated by the
@princeclausfund and
@stimuleringsfonds .
Alongside mentors Fatima Bintou Rassoul SY, Hicham Bouzid and Ola Hassanain, it has been truly grounding, nurturing and inspiring to think together with and guide the creative processes and projects of 12 incredible artistic spatial practitioners hailing from various African geographies.
Our year long programme this year included two lab weeks, the first in Benin earlier and the second in the Netherlands this past September. I am sharing some snippets from our time together from the lab week. What a group! — it is clear that despite the spiralling and continuous catastrophes we face globally, there are shared urgencies, bits of hope and incredibly creative approaches with which to address, reflect upon, move through and think beyond our spatial conditions in the African continent.
Some highlights include:
- Our symposium ‘Intersecting Geographies and Technologies’ hosted kindly at
@kunstinstituutmelly .
- A walking tour unearthing Cape Verdean histories in Rotterdam with Adison dos Reis and Spatial Codes. Truly inspirational!
- A deep listening sonic contextualizing exercise offered by Yasmin Abdu Bushra and Jesse Mpango.
- A walking tour with Wouter Pocournie sharing the socio-spatial histories of the Biljmeer Estate in Amsterdam.
- A generous evening of getting to know other Rotterdam-based practitioners, hosted by
@dar_culturalagency .
- A workshop that Lesego Bantsheng, Afaina de Jong and myself offered through
@matri_archi prompted by a guide we’ve been using lately — on counterpublic practices. Hosted so abundantly always by
@tokosandbodegas .
Extending massive gratitude to this year’s fellows Yasmin Abdu Bushra, Victor Adéwálé, Oratile Mothoagae, Nneoma Angela Okorie, Michael Tesfaye, Khotso Lamola, Jesse Gerard Mpango, Isabella Asiimwe, Elolo Bosoka, Doha Ibrahim, Chantell Hassan and Akwasi Bediako Afrane.
To continuous connections and creative generosity.
