Vandaag zetten we ons eerste gezelschap in de spotlight: Gery Mendes / AllthingsAfrica. AllthingsAfrica is een jonge organisatie die energieke muziektheatervoorstellingen en theatrale concerten produceert, met Afrika als centraal vertrekpunt. Ze verkennen verhalen van de Zwarte mens in al haar vormen en combineren muziek en theater. Gery Mendes, lange tijd actief bij o.a. theatergezelschap Orkater, gaat nu onder eigen vleugels verder als AllthingsAfrica. Als veelzijdige Rotterdamse artiest, MC, dichter, singer-songwriter, acteur en theatermaker vormt hij de drijvende kracht achter de organisatie. Gery werd recent door de Nederlandse pers tot 3x toe genoemd als beste componist/muzikant voor zijn werk in Stepping Stones. NRC, VK/Theaterkrant en 8 weekly zetten Gery bovenaan hun lijstje van beste nieuwe muziek! (zie Theaterjaarboek) Volgend seizoen, na het succes van Borboletas (2023) keert Gery Mendes met Na Ruinas terug in de theaters met zijn eigen werk. Na Ruinas vertelt het verhaal van een vader en zoon, gevangen tussen liefde, verlies en erfenis. “ Vanuit de ruïnes van een droomhuis blikt een man terug op zijn leven, van armoede op Kaapverdië tot een bestaan in Rotterdam, getekend door oorlog, migratie en verlangen”. Na Ruinas wordt een muzikale en poëtische ode aan vaders, zonen en de sporen die geschiedenis nalaat.
