Why Schiaparelli? Elsa Schiaparelli disrupted fashion at a moment when it was expected to behave. She embroidered celestial maps on jackets, added measuring tape as trim, and with Salvador Dali proposed a hat fashioned as an upside down shoe.
Curating this exhibition was an invitation to re-read fashion history - not just as aesthetics or silhouette but as provocation.

Elsa Schiaparelli sent shockwaves through the fashion establishment with her witty, ingenious and provocative designs. Lauded by Cristóbal Balenciaga as the ‘only real artist in couture’ she infused her collections with Surrealist influences, and collaborated on pieces with art-world contemporaries including Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí and Alberto Giacometti.
