What a night! 💫 We were at Grassroots Music Venue - @districtlpool in Liverpool at a sold out show last night with the team at @sona.lux as part of our R&D call in Grassroots Venue Innovation in collaboration with @costarnetwork and supported by @musicvenuetrust 🔊 The Innovation? Sonalux were showcasing their Spatializer - a new affordable spatial audio hardware and software system designed in Liverpool - placing audiences inside a live mix of the sets on the night, and showcasing an immersive sound & light experience. 👏 We want to give a huge round of applause for the artists on the night - @misty.jungle & headliner, @jackjoy27 - both sounded fantastic and with the extra layer of immersive spatial sound gave an unreal performance that cut through the barrier. We’re excited to announce that CoSTAR National Lab and @musicfuturesuk have selected four pioneering R&D projects through the Grassroots Music Venue Innovation Call. Spatial music isn’t new, although it’s still relatively niche as a concept. It has actually been around since biblical times, but has come a long way since then. Those in the know are well aware of how profound its impact can be. Spatialising exploits sound localisation; in other words, a listener's ability to identify the location or origin of a detected sound in direction and distance. The term ‘spatial music’ originated with German composer Robert Beyer, who in 1928 published a paper about “Raummusik”, which translates to ‘space music’. The term ‘spatialisation’ is connected with electroacoustic music, denoting the projection and localisation of sound sources, either in physical or virtual space, or the spatial movement of sound in space. By the 1970s, ‘space music’ was becoming known on the music scene. Popularised by artists like Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, space music was characterised mainly by use of the synthesizer. Today there is the Schaeffer XXI, which is the newest technology in sound spatialisation, soon to be released.
