ABOUT JOE BRAINARD (1942-1994)
Joe Brainard was a collagist, painter, illustrator and writer a part of the New York School of poets and artists. His work reminds us to get real, as in, be real people. And maybe (hopefully) laugh along the way.
His book-length memoir “I Remember” revolutionized what memoir writing could look and feel like. A collection of over 1000 disjointed memories on his life, the body, sex, religion, movie stars and more, all delivered with his disarming sense of clarity and humility.
We will explore this text and carry on the torch of using the words “I remember” as a time-machine for our own lives.
He is also a Pisces.

I will be performing my piece, The Maintenance Worker as part of the Lèche-vitrine exhibition on Wednesday, April 8 at 7pm til late, at Espace Transmission.
The Maintenance Worker positions aesthetic upkeep as a generative force within the engine of class. Through looping gestures of cleaning, resting, and observing, the work renders visible the often obscured labour that sustains social order, as well as the subtle systems that shape presence, behaviour, consumerism, and belonging. Here, maintenance is reframed as performance: bodies, spaces, and identities are continuously upheld, rehearsed, and sold off as an idea.
What are we maintaining when we maintain anything at all?
Lèche-vitrine unfolds as an urban mise-en-scène—a constructed cityscape that invites viewers to reconsider their everyday surroundings through a critical lens. The exhibition interrogates consumer culture and its economies of visibility, reflecting a world structured by accumulation, display, and desire: to be seen in order to exist, and to see in order to want.

What is SMUT? And can it be apolitical?
Thank you to @victorianboyghost@saint.henri.books for inviting me & hosting a special night of dirty talk w NYRSmut editor @joff_doodlebocki
Their talk got me reminiscing on why we write about sex at all. I started the CAT CRUSH series to unpack the messiness and embarrassment of desire during a pandemic. Being single and horny during lockdown was at its best hot in a naughty way and at its worst sad and gauche. The dilemma of fucking outside your bubble or getting home before curfew. Intimacy felt fried and transgressive. Sparse but all consuming.
Flashback to January 2020 I’m on a beach in Santa Teresa fucking the guy pedalling empanadas and mushroom chocolate up and down the strip. The next week I go back to his place and what I wrote when I got back home sparked the series. Swipe to end to read poem.
What are we stripped down to when we desire? And who cares?
Shout out to @postcard2suzy for shaking perfect martinis all night. And to the other readers @femalesportsannouncer for making tech decks sexy and @nicky___9___doors for bringing god into it
Happy vday day xx

This series was conceived to carve out a space for writers to engage in their solitary practice together. The music is an anchor that ritualizes and charges the space, inspiring a stream of consciousness as a live collaboration with sound. It’s a chance to open the hatch
