Prone to laminitis. We've have been working on making this 'diet field' a haven for the horses.
The compacted land has been aerated and here we are adding "Goop" from @soilsmiths to provide microbiology and fungi for the soil's longer term health.
The ambition is to moderate the effects of drought and waterlogging. To also enable the soil life to release the nutrients held in this clay land, to encourage deeper probing roots and help the seed (rye free triple H from @bostonseeds 😉) we are putting down to have an improved chance for growth, strength and nutritional qualities mined from the soil. Big sentence! Big ambitions!!

🌍 INSET Day: Learning From the Land 🌱
Our staff stepped outside the classroom and into the heart of our grounds for an INSET day rooted in climate action, curiosity and community.
@ministryeco sparked powerful conversations about climate change and the role schools can play in shaping a greener future.
@soilsmiths deepened our understanding of soil health - reminding us that every thriving garden starts with what’s happening beneath our feet.
Our horticulturalist @louisegardens_ led a brilliant tour of the allotment, where staff picked fresh garnishes for their mocktails (mint never tasted so good).
Teams also explored curriculum planning, sharing ideas for weaving sustainability into everyday learning.
And to finish, Mr Wildman gave his much‑loved tree tour, sharing stories and knowledge from the incredible trees that shape our grounds.

The compost cup competition is going on until December 2025. Ormond has worked his poo pickings to be more than the sum of its parts (wood and manure). Ormond currently claims the best fungal counts in compost from microscope analysis at Soil Ecology Lab That fungal presence in the paddock's soil is going to enable much better resilience for pasture health in times of drought.
