A Manifesto for the Alleys with Soft Fiction Projects
We wanted The Manifesto design and print process to align with 9ft in Common, so we invited @softfictionprojects to bring the words to life 🙌🏻 They will produce a limited edition A3 print that attendees of the Manifesto Launch and contributors to the programme this year will receive.
Quick, snap up those final few tickets… or keep an eye on social media as we will also release a digital copy.
Soft Fiction Projects is an artist run initiative founded in 2018 by artists Alessia Cargnelli and Emily McFarland.
Soft Fiction Projects is based in Northern Ireland and it is dedicated to produce digital and printed matter on film and artist moving image culture. The printed project acts as a forum for presenting new collaborations, artworks, research and writing from invited artists and contributors.
Revisiting recent history in moving image practices, Soft Fiction Projects research focus is an exploration of underrepresented voices, oppositional histories, geopolitical narratives underpinned by intersectional feminist perspectives which challenge and reframe dominant hegemonic power structures.
A Manifesto for the Alleys is a commission by @belfast2024 and it is supported by @heritagefunduk
What A Way to Make a Living!
We had an incredible day of collective experimentation with our beloved RISO printer yesterday. Thank you so much to our amazing artists participants for deep-diving into our DIY-approach to RISO and creating amazing bi-colour editions.
And as always, many thanks to @pssquaredbelfast for supporting us and to Belfast City Council Small Grants for funding the workshops.

The workshop was part of "What a Way to Make a Living", a new programme strand aims to offer practical support to eight artists based in Northern Ireland who are low-or-no-waged. The 2022 Freelands Artist Programme Artists’ Livelihoods Survey revealed that only 9% of participants’ income from their art practice since 2020 came from sales. We also know, from the 2018 Changing Arts and Minds Report, that artists are three times more likely than the general population to suffer mental ill-health due to factors including poverty and a lack of opportunities.
Through this programme, selected artists developed skills in RISO printing with Soft Fiction Projects, and subsequently will undertake one-to-one sessions with Curator and Uphold co-initiator Ciara Hickey to explore new ways of creating sellable work.
Participants were offered a stipend to cover access, travel, childcare or other costs associated with attending the two sessions.

Last weekend at @ulstermuseum - “Art & Poetry: Ekphrastic Ethics in the Gallery Space”. It was a pleasure to work with poets, painters, essayists, researchers, photographers, performance artists (and more!) for an afternoon of interdisciplinary conversation and experimentation. We talked about the possibilities of ekphrasis, learnt from each others’ practices, and worried about the grapes about to fall off the table in Caravaggio’s “Supper at Emmaus”. We also had the great privilege of being guided by @softfictionprojects to make collages in response to Anne Carson - a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Thank you to the British Art Network @paulmelloncentr for supporting this opportunity to have fun with art and poetry and see where they can take us.
This workshop was supported by the British Art Network (BAN). BAN is a Subject Specialist Network supported by Tate and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, with additional public funding provided by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The Network promotes curatorial research, practice and theory in the field of British Art. Its members include curators, academics, artist-researchers, conservators, producers and programmers at all stages of their professional lives.
We are really looking forward to our upcoming trip to Dublin on Wednesday 25th October, to launch a new set of printed editions made in collaboration with the @belfastfeministfilmschool alumni in response to the film "Scuola Senza Fine" (1983) by Adriana Monti.
The event is part of the current exhibition at @projectartscentre "Long time we’ve been working / Tamall fada atá muid ag obair". Thank you @saragreavu for inviting us!

📢📢📢 New SFP editions, for your eyes only!
A few months ago, @upholdartni commissioned us to produce a new work to be sold on their platform. We developed a series of Riso prints based on our ongoing research project Making Space.
The editions are now available to buy on @upholdartni website, along with the amazing work of many fellow NI-based artists - check them out before they all sold out!
~~~~
About the work:
These editions are part of Making Space , a research project we initiated during a month-long residency at Guest Projects London, in 2019. Re-visiting theoretical research and publicly funded social projects developed by the Matrix Feminist Design Co-Operative, the project explores the origins of a community of women who squatted houses in the Hackney neighbourhood in the late 1970’s. This community had historical importance in providing opportunities, especially for queer women and single mothers, to live autonomously, connecting with wider feminist politics in London and taking control over their immediate build environment. This work is part of an ongoing research project around housing, feminism and urban change in UK and Ireland.
A special thanks to Christine Wall for generously sharing her ongoing research and personal experience.
40% from each sale will be donated to Womens Aid.
