When I first began studying with my master Minsoo Sohn, he made me learn ten preludes and fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier in my very first month.
I was thirteen, discovering for the first time the language of Bach through the piano.
Soon came the Inventions, Sinfonias, French Suites, and Keyboard Concertos
As I came to know Bach more deeply, I fell in love with the Goldberg Variations.
My teacher lent me more than ten recordings by Lifschitz, (Peter) Serkin, Landowska which still remain with me like old friends.
After hearing them, I told him I wanna play Goldberg
He said, Then let’s play the whole work within a year.
But I couldn’t keep that promise
I had wandered into Russian music, and the Goldberg Variations slowly faded from my hands.
Eight years later, I return to fulfill that promise.
My teacher always said, Bach is our greatest ancestor the source of everything.
Beethoven wrote, “Bach is not a brook, but an ocean.”
Within Bach lies the meeting of precision and emotion, of order and freedom.
My teacher often laughed at the last variation the Quodlibet amazed that after such a long journey, Bach ended with a folk song. “How human,” he would say, “and how exhilarating.”
Beethoven once described himself as both a brain’s owner and a heart speaking to another heart.
Perhaps all greatness lives in such contradictions.
And if Bach were to hear my goldberg variations recording
I imagine he would smile and murmur, “Kraut und Rüben,”
and I would bow in gratitude for his laughter.

I offer you my second release of the year—Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons. It’s now open for pre-order, and today, the sixth piece, “June (Barcarolle),” drifts quietly into the world. The cover art is a work by my dear friend Ho-Yeon Choi @bacnekgrvowl , whose brush and words trace the still, fleeting memories of those tender ancient hours which this music recalls, and dares to resurrect as eternal reverie. The album will be released on 22 August
Recorded at the Menuhin Hall on 31 July, 1 August, 2024

We are pleased to announce that Yunchan Lim’s album Chopin Études is now available to pre-order on vinyl.
“His Chopin is as flexible and feather-light as it is fluent and fiery, as compelling in its sense of structure as in its relishing of detail.
The whole experience radiates joyful, youthful exuberance.”

On Friday my debut studio album is released. Recording Chopin’s Études felt like a mountain I had to overcome some day, and I put a lot of hard work into preparing the piece. Thank you for listening.
At just 18 years old, Yunchan Lim (@sofrolimsky ) recently became the youngest pianist ever to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. This week, he made his Carnegie Hall debut on our most storied stage, performing an all-Chopin program of etudes and four encores. 📷: @chrisleephotonyc
