Delving into the relationship of two teenage daughters with her recently divorced mother, “Al Lado Del Río” is a twelve minute short film that lingers on the theme of absence.
Directed by Colombian filmmaker Sofia Camargo, the film focuses on the absence of a father figure felt by these women to talk about the feminine experience in the Latin American social context.
Deeply inspired by photography, the director’s stories arise from images she’s really fond of. For this short film, the inspiration came from childhood photos of her own mother in typical floral Colombian landscapes, which later served as the film’s scenario.
Sofia is known for portraying the inner life of female characters whose conflict and desire seem to be revealed through the body, its senses, and gestures. Her work as a filmmaker explores women and domestic life through deeply textured storytelling.
