On April 23rd, @sofia_uts held their first annual forum; a staple event among orthodox societies. This forum centred around the timeless question of why God allows suffering. Graphics by @nha4sho

Today, on Bright Tuesday, we celebrate the Holy Neomartyrs Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene of Lesvos. After the fall of Constantinople and surrounding areas in 1453, Archimandrite Raphael and Deacon Nicholas fled to the island of Lesvos. They settled in a Monastery built by a pious woman named Melpomeni in 1433, upon the ruins of a female Monastery that was destroyed in 1235 by Saracen pirates. This was on a hill near the town of Thermi, 14km from the island’s capital Mytilini. There was already one monk living there in solitude, and under Raphael, who became an abbot, a small brotherhood was formed. In September 1462 Lesvos was conquered by the Ottoman Turks. The monastery was not disturbed by the Turks for about 6 months until Holy Week 1463. Fearful for their lives, people from the local towns sought refuge in the Monastery including the local Mayor and his family, and a teacher. On Holy Friday, the Turks captured Abbot Raphael, Deacon Nicholas, the Mayor and his family, and a teacher. The other Christians managed to hide in the mountains. They began to torture them for information about those who hid. Irene, the mayor’s 12-year-old daughter, had her hand cut off, was put in an earthen pot and was burnt alive in front of her parents who were tied to a walnut tree and later killed. Abbot Raphael was brutally beaten and repeatedly stabbed before being hung upside down from a walnut tree. His jaw was then sawed off. Deacon Nicholas was also stabbed and died due to heart failure. The Turks destroyed the Monastery and left. This occurred on Bright Tuesday, 9th of April 1463. The locals, including a priest and monk, secretly buried the Martyrs among the ruins. As generations passed, memory of what had occurred faded and was eventually forgotten. In 1959, the saints began appearing to locals in dreams and miraculous visions, revealing their stories and the location of their Martyrdom. The site was excavated and the relics of the Martyrs were found exactly as described. Relics of thirty nuns and Igoumeni (Abbess) Olympia who were Martyred in 1235 were also found. The saints were canonised in 1970. (Continued in comments)
