Echoes of Byzantium: Constantine & Justinian in Algeria
Join us for an upcoming evening of history, faith, and cultural discovery, co-organised with SOFIA UTS.
“The Legacy of Constantine & Justinian in Algeria”
with Jack Bettar (University of Technology Sydney)
This fascinating presentation explores the rich and often overlooked Byzantine and Christian heritage of North Africa, where empire, faith, and identity were continually reshaped throughout Late Antiquity. From the grand cities of Constantine, Timgad, and Djemila to the spiritual centre of Hippo Regius, Algeria preserves the enduring legacy of a transformative era in Mediterranean history.
The talk will explore:
• The rise of Christianity across North Africa
• The Donatist controversy and its lasting influence
• The reforms and imperial vision of Constantine the Great and Justinian I
• Algeria’s role as a vital crossroads of Mediterranean civilisation
Jack Bettar is a student of law and political science at the University of Technology Sydney, an official photographer and member of the joint archaeological expedition to Egypt conducted by Macquarie University and the University of Chicago, and a speaker on Middle Eastern history, society, and culture. His recent travels throughout Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt have further enriched his research into the region’s history and cultural heritage.
