Unveiling the Sacred Language of Byzantine Chant
Last evening, we had the privilege of hosting an enriching and deeply insightful presentation on the sacred tradition of Byzantine Chant, delivered by Dr Dimitri Koubaroulis, Director of Melisma Ensemble.
Through his thoughtful and engaging presentation, attendees were invited into the profound spiritual world that lies behind the musical tradition of the Orthodox Church. Far beyond melody alone, Byzantine Chant was revealed as a living expression of theology, prayer, symbolism, and worship, where every element carries meaning and purpose within the life of the Church.
The audience was captivated as Dr Koubaroulis explored questions surrounding the role of the psaltis (chanter), the symbolism behind the traditional black attire of chanters, the significance of musical scales within hymnography, and the meaning of the distinctive syllables heard throughout Byzantine chanting. His presentation illuminated the depth, beauty, and sacred intentionality embedded within this ancient ecclesiastical tradition.
The evening was very well attended, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the wonderful students of SOFIA USYD for their generous assistance in co-organising the event and presenting our speaker to the audience.
We wholeheartedly thank Dr Dimitri Koubaroulis for sharing his knowledge, wisdom, and passion so generously with all who attended. It was truly a memorable and inspiring evening for everyone present. A big thank you to @uncletzimmy for providing the photos!

Join us for an insightful evening exploring the rich symbolism and meaning behind the sacred tradition of Byzantine Chant.
📖 Symbolism in Byzantine Chant
With Dimitri Koubaroulis, Director of Melisma Ensemble
The traditional music of the Orthodox Church is full of symbolism and meaning. From the essence of chanting itself, to chanter dress, musical scales, notation, hymns, chanting practices and much more — every aspect carries a deeper spiritual significance within the life of the Church.
Have you ever wondered:
• What does the word psaltis (chanter) actually mean?
• Why do chanters traditionally wear black?
• Why are certain hymns chanted in different scales?
• What do the seemingly nonsensical syllables during chanting mean?
Bring your own questions too, as we come together to demystify these beautiful traditions and deepen our understanding of Byzantine chant.
