My full year recap is incoming but before I could talk about ups and downs of the past 12 months, I had to talk about my final performance of 2025: my first year as a company member of @epicplayersla , my first production with the community... and my first performance as a mobility aid user. Rehearsals for the cabaret started in September, and I was pretty thrilled when I found out that I was going to have the opportunity to perform a Disney song on stage with THE @joshgad . ☃️ But 2 months into rehearsal, something suddenly went wrong in my body... and it didn't get better. Four ER visits later, I went from dancing and singing to barely being able to leave my bed. I have experienced disability in a myriad of ways before, but this moment brought the greatest loss of capacity and independence yet. ❤️‍🩹 I have been stunned beyond words by the generosity and compassion of the people that have showed up in ways I could not have expected, most especially the company members of EPIC. On the phone with @bettercalljsaul a week before the show, we made a Plan A, B, & C for how to navigate the day of the show and prepare for a reality where I might not be able to perform. On site, I struggled greatly to move my body from one end of the venue to the other, but on stage you'd never know. Backstage, various performers stayed with me while I laid on the floor between songs. I'm absolutely proud of the performance I gave three weeks ago. I have complicated feelings about the praise I've received for it, because I can't help but wonder if it would be the same in different circumstances. There is so much grief in losing abilities you took for granted, and so much loneliness in no longer being able to make choices on your own. This experience has changed me forever in more ways than one. But here I am, surrounded by people who love me and hold me up, doing the damned thing anyway 🥹🫶🎶✨ The future is pretty uncertain for me right now, but I'm feeling lucky & grateful for these special folks and I'm looking forward to the next chance to perform alongside them! As a producer, performer, and featured composer, Socks reflects on the joy of creating 8TPS and what this concert means to them. Socks Whitmore (they/them) is a neuroqueer producer, director, actor, voice artist, writer, composer, educator, and self-described “professional overachiever” rooted in voice, text, & accessibility. Their artistic practice spans from live performance to digital media to print, including music theater, choral music, audio dramas, video games, poetry, short fiction, op-eds, and more. Socks has been produced by New Musicals Inc, Overtone Industries, & Feminist Fairytales, and published by American Composers Forum, Sappho Small Talk, Translash Media, Queer Quarterly, & more. On fancier occasions, they’ve performed in renowned spaces such as the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall, and Sydney Opera House.
