When Paloma passed, I was in so much shock that the only thing that would snap me out of it and allow me to cry and grieve was this video specific trend. Seeing other pet parents chronicle the complex feelings that come with not only losing a pet, but the journey of watching them grow older made me feel less alone, knowing that someone else intimately understand the devastation that was suddenly thrust upon my life. I don’t remember Paloma as she was at the end, suffering from a degenerative neurological condition, but as the yappy, demanding diva who could be found causing mischief at any given moment, the way she lived for most of her 16 years on this earth. She was with me through my most formative years, from moving to America for year 6, to getting married to the boy I had known since I was 11, she always stood by my side. She passed 8 days after our wedding, only two days after we arrived back in the UK, and I hadn’t seen her for a month. I think she must have known that I was looked after now, and that her job could finally be done. I’ll miss you forever and always. Rest well, my sweet girl.
