We are so excited to officially announce that we are raising funds to create the world’s first eco-conscious stop-motion animated feature film, How to Bee 🐝 A narrative adventure for all ages that weaves real education on the life of bees, the film offers an inside look at the lives of the little creatures who pollinate 75% of our world’s food supply. In keeping with our values and mission, the entire world of the film will be handcrafted from eco-friendly and non-toxic materials and methods. This is an ambitious, deeply meaningful project and we couldn’t imagine a better time to announce it than Spring, when the world is waking up, the flowers are opening, and the bees are returning to do what they do best. We would love your support in bringing this vision to life 🐝 Link in bio to learn more and donate to the film fund!

Introducing the trailer for our very first short film, The Farmer’s Daughter! Nearly four years in the making, this project has been a labor of love that has helped our studio grow in more ways than one. So many hearts and hands have touched this project; from the regenerative farmer whose expertise informed the script, to local Montana artists learning on the job, to industry professionals supportive of our mission. We set out to prove that natural and non-toxic materials can produce the same quality work as synthetic and toxic ones and we are so happy to say that we did it! One special note is that the score was tuned to 432hz, the sound at which we hear Nature, rather than the industry standard 440hz. Can you hear the difference? Words do not do justice to exactly what unfolded where the jungle meets the sea in Nosara, Costa Rica over a week long immersion guided by @zachbushmd and his incredible team. To say I am changed is an understatement. I had the immense honor to have been witness to the accelerated growth of 120 souls experiencing the gift of what it means to be human and how our relationship with Nature and each other affects the health of all of us. I spoke with the trees. I watched the plants dance. I felt the oneness of the ocean as I floated in it for hours. I breathed in the horizon. And I saw the fear that all of us cling to so tightly in order to survive in a world that has forgotten that we are Nature too. Most importantly, I realized that we have been waiting for permission to reconnect to an inherent part of ourselves. I didn’t know I could talk to the trees until someone invited me to listen. I didn’t know what I was holding onto until someone finally invited me to disconnect from story and instead to just feel. And I didn’t see the deep beauty in what was underneath my fears until it was mirrored by my fellow humans. I listened and I bore witness to people facing their shadows and, in the stillness, they were able to find their own way through the darkness. Each of us became our own hero on a heroes journey that only we could face. And in completing that character arc within ourselves, we were able to step outside of the stories holding us back. As a storyteller this was incredibly foreign to confront the stories I told myself. Because there is beauty in making meaning. But there is also danger in clinging so tightly to story that we stop paying attention to the feeling behind it. Because this is where disease begins. We are a collective immersed in story. From the narratives we spin to make sense of our experiences to the ones we’re told on a daily basis through the news, the government, advertisements, and the digital programming available at our fingertips. How do we discern truth in all the stories we’re told? We reconnect. To each other, to the planet, to ourselves. *continued in comments*

Creativity has a way of bringing stories to life in unexpected ways—Frame by frame, detail by detail. Today’s featured film: 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙥𝙚 Calliope, directed by Melissa Bloom of The Sisters Bloom, with music by @k.atels , is an eco-conscious stop-motion animation experience created in Kalispell. Returning to Westland after creating the beloved animated bison film for Project Winterland last year, Melissa brings not one, but two stop-motion projects to this year’s festival—and will share a sneak peek of a third new piece live with audiences in Whitefish. Blending handcrafted artistry, storytelling, and a deep connection to nature, her work is quickly becoming part of Westland’s creative legacy. We’re building something meaningful together, and it starts with the stories we choose to share. #WestlandImpactFestival #WhyWestland #WhitefishMontana @sistersbloomstudios @anderson_888 @k.atels

We had so much fun welcoming guest animator Max Winston to the studio! 🌿 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Max traveled from Los Angeles to spend a few weeks bringing the tightrope walker and calliope hummingbird to life! It’s always such a joy to have industry professionals lend their talent and expertise to our mission 🎪 Music: “Calliope” by @k.atels

When @k.atels came to us with this concept for the title track of her new album “Calliope,” we knew it was the perfect fit for our ethos. The video centers on a tightrope walker in the circus who pushes past her limits only to find that sometimes allowing yourself to fall can take you to even greater heights. This metaphor for the artists journey and what it’s like to really allow yourself to explore and play within your creativity was a message that resonated with our whole team. Watch the full video on YouTube and see how we made it at the link in bio 🎪

A peek behind the curtains of our first eco-conscious music video, Calliope by Katels 🎪 The team had so much fun constructing this miniature circus world – from a hand-sewn circus tent, a tightrope walker given new life from assets of The Farmer’s Daughter, and a hummingbird built from scratch using balsa wood, pine pitch glue, regenerative wool batting, linen, and silk. See the full breakdown on our site under Field Notes, link in bio!

The tightrope walker must be precise in her path forward for the show to go on. A step anywhere but along the narrow line of her destiny would end it all. So she keeps stepping forward… I’m so excited to share with you the music video for Calliope! One of my many inspirations for this album came from the calliope, which is the iconic steam organ that you might associate with the circus. When I would listen to the sounds that would become the title track for Calliope, I kept thinking of a tightrope walker, standing above her crowd. An idea started to form for a video where she gets lost in a space outside of the circus tent. Falling from the tightrope, I knew a transformation must occur! I was so excited to find that there was a stop motion studio in my neck of the woods, and I reached out to see if they would be interested in helping create a music video for me. Here is my big thank you to The Sisters Bloom for bringing the imagery of this song to life! 🩷💛💚 Director: Melissa Bloom Music + Concept: @k.atels Cinematography: @motionnoise Animation: @madmaxwinston @grace.rehbein.art Fabrication: Melissa Bloom @kyleashayray @achrysalis.moon @grace.rehbein.art @camillehine Compositing: cartoonraccoon Please make sure to go watch the full video on Youtube 🥰 follow the link in my bio to find out what happens to our tightrope walker!! #stopmotion #animation #musicvideo #montanamusicians

One of the most common fabrics in animation and creative production is also one most people have never questioned 🌿 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Duvetyne has been a studio staple for decades used for backdrops, set dressing, and light control. What most people don’t realize is that duvetyne, made from conventional cotton, is flammable on its own. To meet OSHA safety standards, it’s sprayed with a chemical flame retardant, which has to be reapplied every so often. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s a small detail that quietly adds up – in the air of a working studio, in the materials we bring into our creative spaces, in the broader story of what our industry is built on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Wool curtains change that. Naturally flame retardant without any chemical treatment, 100% wool does everything duvetyne does while leaving the chemicals behind. It’s one of those swaps that once you make it, you wonder why it took so long to find!
