i’m starting on a new batch of custom knives this week, and i needed to call in some help with my heat treating. if you know @triplebhandmade , then you know he’s one of the most knowledgeable people you’re likely to find in the knife community when it comes to metallurgy and cutting. not only that, but he’s one of the nicest guys around. just an A+ dude. he’s the first person i call when i need advice on heat treatment of an unfamiliar steel. when i reached out to him about my current project using nitro v he generously invited me to come by his shop and do it there together. he’s certainly better set up than me (see slide 3)! anyway, shawn went above and beyond for me on this, and i am so grateful. i’m hoping i can do these the steel justice on these upcoming projects!

today we celebrate the birthday of this amazing woman. words can’t describe how much she has come to mean to me. if you had told me a year ago that i was on the verge of meeting someone who makes me feel the way @merve.caydere does, i would simply not have believed you. i didn’t think i had the capacity. i’m not exactly a spring chicken, but i guess sometimes it takes a long time to meet the love of your life. any sooner, and i don’t know if i’d have been ready. anyway, here’s to 100 more birthdays, sweetie. i love you.

how’s this for an easter palette? i recently unearthed my very old stash of citadel paints, some of them dating back to around 1991, and i was absolutely stunned by the fact that most of them were still totally usable! • it’s been really fun for me to get back into the warhammer hobby after SO MANY years away from it. highly recommended. • #warhammer40k #oldhammer40k #oldhammer #killteam #citadelminiatures #citadelpaints

my table saw sled/spacer cutting jig is back in action after being in hibernation for a few years. makes square and repeatable cuts to a darn respectable tolerance, all things considered. the saw itself is an old JET machine that i got on craigslist for basically nothing. the blade is a 3/32 freud with a blade stabilizer on it. in general i am not particularly comfortable using table saws, so i made this tool to keep my hands well away from the working bits. stay safe out there!

today i would like to raise a glass to my friend @rachelklarsen ! i’ve known rachel since shortly after my arrival in portland, and we became fast friends while working on coraline. we even shared a studio space for a while before she set off on her big adventure. it has been a great joy to watch my friend continue to chase her dreams working as an animator all over the globe for more than a decade, and i’m in awe of all that she has accomplished. most notably, you may be familiar with her dear friend the tiny chef, of @thetinychefshow fame. it’s been my great honor to help rachel and the chef over the years and i am just overjoyed that the chef’s new show is having its debut on @nickelodeon today. it’s been a long and challenging road, and rachel’s resilience and dedication have been such an inspiration to me and so many others rooting her on from the sidelines. so cheers to rach, cheers to the chef, and cheers to good things happening to good friends! • oh yeah, @omarlittledog was overjoyed when he got to meet the chef a few years ago. what a day that was!

i suspect you’re going to be seeing a fair bit of this sort of thing from me between now and halloween, so be forewarned. wendell and wild, the animated feature that i worked on for the past 3 years now has a release date and a new teaser. i don’t know about you, but it looks like it’s going to be good to me! look for it on october 28 -only on netflix! except also in select theaters? #henryselick #wendellandwild @netflixfilm @netflixqueue @strongblacklead @keeganmichaelkey @jordanpeele @lyricnicoleross @im.angelabassett @thejameshong @monkeypawproductions

i moved out of my last working shop in 2019, if you can believe that. i’m surprised (and grateful) that so many of you have stuck around in the interim. i thought i was going to be able to get things set up at my last rental, but it just never happened, and then covid lockdown and all the associated madness and anxiety of portland in 2020 just kind of took the wind out of my sails. now that i’ve got a new place of my own i’m trying my darndest to get those sails all puffed up again. getting this grinding room set up is a major step in the right direction. i still have a lot of general shop set up to do, but this is huge. HUGE. next step is my hand sanding station. after that it’s all icing. AS IF.

i spent hundreds of hours in my teens and 20s recording music on my cassette 4 track. these were formative times for my developing sense of creativity and it was maybe the first time i learned that you can just “do stuff” and cool things can happen as a result. i continued to make (analog) demos of my bands as time went on, but i left the real recording projects to the professionals. i’ve recently been trying to get back into it on the digital side of things, so i was thrilled when my dear friend mark asked me to help make some demos for a couple of guitars he had recently completed. recording music is so much fun when you’re hanging out with friends, and when the musician is as brilliant as bryan here. hopefully there will be a lot more of this type of thing in the future. mark’s notes below: •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Bryan Rahija @bryanrahija playing ‘Nothing’s Fifty-Fifty’ off his album ‘Timber’ . This album has played many times in my workshop over the past year, so it was a real treat to hear Bryan playing live in that same space where the guitars were designed and built (we recorded a bunch of songs on 2 guitars). If you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking out ‘Timber’ . video by @sheabordo , audio capture by @jspake I spent a decade in a past life building stop-motion puppets for the big screen with these guys. We had a ridiculous amount of fun reuniting on a creative project and turning my garage into a recording space for a weekend. And shoutout to Gabriel @upperhandstudios for the pro audio mix. . OM-13 walnut / redwood arriving soon @thenorthamericanguitar in Nashville. . #bryanrahija #timber #nothingsfiftyfifty #gaieroguitars
