I’ve made so so many milking stools, and while I love them all, this one is my favorite. The angles, the single slab top, the taper … this design will be a new standard, and I hope to have them available more often. This month six years ago, we turned an old logging trail into our driveway. We had to cut one walnut tree down to create a drivable path. We milled the walnut log with an Alaskan mill, and air dried it slowly. Now a portion of that walnut tree is this table base.

Introducing the Winifred Table. Named after our Irish Setter, Winni. This piece combines hand scooped texture with painting in acrylic - carefully considered joinery with hand chiseled inlay work - hand turned legs with a subtle soft claw. And on a practical note, this piece can be flat packed, boasts seating all the way around, and small lights inset into the bottom of the table top highlight Ivy’s painting.

I did the math yesterday. I picked up my first power tool 17 years ago, when I was 26. The more I learn, the more I understand I don’t know - the endless learning curve of woodworking + design is comforting and captivating. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found my calling.

I’m often asked if I have any advice for woodworkers starting their own business. You’ll figure out your own design language and style of making - it doesn’t have to be new, but it’s gotta be YOU. My suggestion is that you buy a good camera, learn how to use it with intention, and photograph your work. Photography and video is the first thing a client will see, and representing your work with pride provides an open door to new clients. I also feel strongly about a perfect butterfly - practice, practice, practice - once 99% of your tests are perfect, add them sparingly.
Simple is best. Explore. Accept failure as part of the process. Stand around and think. Plan. Enjoy the process. Respect the slow growth of trees. Slow down.

I took a bunch of photos of our new table design yesterday. But I’m trying really hard to keep the finished piece a tiny bit of a surprise for @icff_official . I’m a very impatient person, so it’s a tough exercise in will power to keep this piece from you all! For example - I told Ivy what she was getting for her birthday about five months prior to the day.
Walnut slab top from @gobywalnut the base is made from walnut that came from our land and was milled by us, hand turned trestle legs, hand painted + scooped panel. There’s a lot going on, but the fundamental design is a simple silhouette.
