The 21st edition of SIMULTAN Festival begins with a simple yet uncomfortable question: what do we lose when everything becomes perfect? At a time when technology promises maximum resolution — clearer images, purer sounds, more efficient processes — Against Resolution proposes friction, imperfection, and unfinished thinking as legitimate critical practices. SIMULTAN XXI — a workshop for an uncertain future. In 2005, SIMULTAN started out of a curiosity about what was new and a desire to explore uncharted territory, where video art and sound experimentation were finding their place in an emerging local scene. Twenty editions later, technology is no longer a novelty. It is the medium we live in. And the question has shifted: not how you use it, but how you think with it. How you remain responsive, honest, and authentic when the tools have multiplied and the answers arrive before the questions. 2026 is a year of building, connection, and dialogue. The program brings together practitioners and theorists, new co-productions, workshops for young artists, and a publication that, for the first time, maps the festival's history through the lens of its transdisciplinary concerns. In September, these threads converge at MX – the Corneliu Mikloși Museum, a space itself in transformation. Mineral Amnesia Ioana Vreme Moser „Mineral Amnesia“ untersucht die Entwicklung und den Zerfall früher, lösch- und programmierbarer Speicher durch Klang. In Quarzfenstern eingeschlossene EPROMs – heute obsolete Mikrochips – verlieren ihre Daten, wenn sie Licht ausgesetzt werden. Die Installation rettet verschiedene Generationen dieser Chips und spielt sie unter UV-Licht ab, bis ihre Klänge langsam erodieren und schließlich verschwinden. Das Werk durchquert das digitale dunkle Zeitalter aus der Perspektive eines veralteten technischen Geräts.

1971 erfunden, etwa zur gleichen Zeit wie der Mikroprozessor, stellten EPROMs einen wichtigen Fortschritt in der Computertechnik dar. Ihre weite Verbreitung beschleunigte das technologische Wachstum, führte jedoch auch dazu, dass Daten in alten Hardwarekörpern eingeschlossen blieben. ⚡ The final day of SIMULTAN XX – RE:MEDIATE, our anniversary edition. Last night, Electric Somatic: The boundary of my body, rather an event horizon, marked the closing of this edition’s live journey with a work-in-progress performance where sound, touch, and electric tension became forms of bodily communication. In Electric Somatic, the notion of interexistence replaces that of coexistence: the world is not made up of fixed entities, but of relationships in motion, in a continuous circuit of influence. Body, environment, and technology are no longer separate, they shape one another in real time. The closing weekend of SIMULTAN Festival XX – RE:MEDIATE brings us a final live performance that traces the body’s presence through sound, contact, and electric tension — offering a glimpse into ongoing research on somatic sound, spatial systems, and corporeal feedback. “The boundary of my body, rather an event horizon” is a work in progress presentation, part of the Electric Somatic project, and explores the body as a resonant interface — both conductor and emitter — within a live sound installation. Initiated by choreographer Alexandra Gîrbea @zaranshada through @concentric_projects , this piece was created in collaboration with Uțu Pascu @doctorul_sinteza (sound design), Denis Bolborea @denis.kablat (choreography), Nimbert Ambrus @nimberta (installation), Andreea Novac @andanovac (choreographic dramaturgy), with stylistic direction by Claudia Negulici @claudianegulici l. The final day of the opening weekend at SIMULTAN Festival XX – one more round of worlds to explore. What are we re:mediating today? Starting at 14:00, the exhibitions at Comenduirea Garnizoanei remain open for slow-paced exploration, until 22:00. 🎥 At 16:00, we return to the small hall at @cinemastudiotimisoara for Shaping Scapes and Environments, a video program that transports us into worlds where the mechanical and the poetic coexist, where images become vehicles for both data and desire. Stick around afterwards for a discussion with the festival team and jury members – followed by the announcement of this year’s three awarded video works. From 19:00, we move to the main hall at the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre for the last three live performances of the weekend: @_sillyconductor_ presents a special live edition of his ORCHIS album, released just a few months ago, dedicated to Romania’s wild orchids – accompanied by visuals from long-time collaborator and video guru @dreamrec . Expect rabbits. Expect pearls. 20:00, come meet Anthony Pateras @anthony__pateras – Australian composer, pianist and electroacoustic artist, whose practice spans classical composition, improvisation, experimental electronics and noise. 21:00, we close the evening with a hypnotic live performance by Marie Delprat @delprat.mc – musician, composer and performer from Switzerland, working at the intersection of sound, image and movement. 🎟️ More details and tickets via the links in bio.
