AN ANNOUNCEMENT: I like September, it feels like a month where changes happen, perhaps it’s the back-to-school feeling that never quite leaves? Well, there are big changes happening here.
After nine years, I have decided to close Simple Shape. This has been a tricky decision to make because I LOVE the business that I have created. When I look back at the mission statement that I wrote for myself when I began, it still stands: ‘Good things + Good people = Good sense’. And there really have been some super good things, so many spectacularly good people and so much fun too.
I also set out to curate a shop that sold ONLY handmade or hand crafted products that were designed and made ONLY in the UK & Ireland. No importing, no throw-away trend-led pieces. And, I’m proud of what I have stocked over the years.
However, the landscape that Simple Shape started in has morphed (without going on, Brexit, price rises, instagram, all play their part). Of course, yes, yes there is sadness but there is opportunity too and I am excited about that.
SO, what happens now?
The Studio-Shop will NOT OPEN any more. But, there will be a SALE across the whole site until December (or before, if everything is sold). SALE STARTS FRIDAY.
I have many ‘thank yous’ that I would like to say, so keep an eye out for those over the next few weeks on here. For now though, one big thank you to you, for reading this far and supporting along the way 🙏.
I was chatting to an ex-literary agent the other night and she described life changes as being like the next Act in a play. Such a brilliant description.
CLOSED FOR AUGUST: Simple Shape is shut for summer. If you place an order it will be posted on 2nd September. As a small little business we are taking the time to regroup, rethink, relax! I hope you understand.

SIMPLE SUGGESTION: COLOUR PALETTE. Pick a colour (💚 for me) and then use different tones of the same colour to build a unified setting.
It really works for table settings, which is what I was thinking about here, but actually is good for interiors generally I think. It adds interest without being busy and distracting.
Just my thoughts 💭💭💭. Are you a colour palette / use the tones kind of table layer / interiors styler…or more of a minimalist (white, classic), or maybe a maximalist (colours, yes all of them)?

SALAD SEASON: + SWAPPED SHOP DAY. I am OPEN today, Wednesday in a change to the usual billing.

BOS x LOUMT x SIMPLE SHAPE: we are No. 1 on the map for Brockley Open Studio (I’ll post the map pdf in stories). Our neighbourhood will be filled with all forms of art THIS WEEKEND - think of an art form and there’s a good chance it will be represented.
We are hosting screen printer @loumt . You’ll be able to quiz Lucy on her making techniques, get involved and print a card as well as buy art works too. It will be relaxed, friendly, fun, interesting…COME!
We will of course have our collection of homewares for sale too.
It’s all round a lovely weekend and the weather looks like it might even be ok too.

BITS & BOBS: where do you put your trinkets? Do you take your jewellery off at night? Do you wash up in your rings? I do think about other things, some of them are even big, important things, but you know, I also wonder these tiddly questions too. And it’s simpler to offer a solution to these little questions in the form of cheerfully coloured - Miami Pink, Swimming Pool Blue and Palm Green - trinket pots. All made in the Britain, crafted by hand and have low mileage too.

BROCKLEY OPEN STUDIO: SAT 6 & SUN 7 JULY this is my attempt to persuade you that this scruffy little space will transform into a wonderful gallery and demo space. IT WILL. Trust me! And then we will welcome @loumt (more on Lucy and her work to come…)
BOS has been running for years, decades. It has grown into an event that encompasses lots of streets, many artists and multiple disciplines including (but definitely not limited to) printing, painting, fine art, drawing, photography, sculpture, screen printing, etching…. @brockley_open_studios what have I missed?!
It is super well organised and relaxed. For a map of all the people taking part go to the BOS website.

I am VERY happy to have the joyful Lucy Morris-Thomas, founder of LOUMT @loumt exhibiting AND demonstrating her work with us in the Simple Shape Studio-Shop.
Lucy studied at Kingston University, is a graphic designer and screen prints as her personal creative outlet. She has used her dyslexia to inform her artistic interest - a passion for the beautiful simplicity of alphabet books plays out in the work she makes. Lucy and her screen printing beds will be with us and she will demonstrate how she works. You will also be able to see and buy prints, see works in progress as well as some new work too.

BROCKLEY OPEN STUDIO @brockley_open_studios has been running for decades and is a community event celebrating local artists and makers. This year 50 different artist will be showing their work across multiple destinations. The venues can be found on the BOS map on their website.
