Post Sunday dinner bell seems like a good time to announce this amazing historical release. ‘An Afternoon With Victor Dimisich’ puts you in virtual Christchurch, 1981, pre Pin Group, pre Flying Nun. For my money the s/t VDB 12” is one of the premier, stand alone releases on the storied label. And this session pre dates that by 2 years. Bruce Russell’s astonishing liner notes sets it up, & it’s almost like, you were there (you weren’t).

The original ‘Dusted In Memphis’ has been a longtime favorite since before the Berlin Wall was tumbled. For Chilton fans in search of even more unblemished gems beyond the offerings found on ‘Like Flies On Sherbert’, it was like your own private diamond mine. And I was this many years old when I came across this dbl lp edition today that I had no idea existed. And it’s the OG version + a whole bunch’ve unheard (by me) shoot-from-the-hip genius c/o a Man Called Destruction. Shirt tucking Big Star purists might sniff haughtily, but fans of Chilton’s louche acuity will be chuffed. And why not? The entirety of side four is worth it alone. #notarecordstoredayrelease
Anyone out there lucky enough to tune into Mike Shuter’s ‘Serf Ohio’ radio program (1980-81, ACRN, Ohio U) will distinctly recall the Scissor Fits ‘I Don’t Want To Work For British Airways’ getting a spin every show. It was basically an inside joke; Mike had worked a stint for British Airways before attending the halls of academia in southeastern Ohio. So that 1st ep was a given for me. Minimum Table Stacks has compiled both 7”ers + all extant unreleased songs for this angular, high paced lp. Hype sticker aptly references Buzzcocks & Rezillos (among others), but in the spirit of March Madness, I’m recommending for fans’ve the run & gun style via Paul Westhead, Jerry Tarkanian & Rick Pitino.
