Hypermobility and connective tissue disorders are still barely taught in healthcare degrees. đĄ
At best? A quick mention. Maybe the Beighton score.
At worst? Nothing at all.
Across 9+ years of study, I was never properly taught how to recognise or manage conditions like hEDS. đ¤Ż
And that has consequences.
I still think about a patient from early in my career.
Complex symptoms. Constant pain. No clear answers.
She was passed between professionals, dismissed because her scans didnât âexplainâ her symptoms, and eventually lost access to care altogether.
We were all trying - but we didnât have the knowledge.
Now? I see it differently. I understand what we were missing. And I know how much more we could have done.
Thatâs the part that stays with you. I will never forget this patient.
This isnât about blame - itâs about a gap in education that still exists.
And it needs to change.
