"Got the message when I was on the toilet. Seemed fake. Then after some quick cross checking, turned out to be reel. Hopped on the call that same day after a 14 hour shooting day in Iceland. Rearaging the background to look most professional. Before we knew it we were in LA, merging his ideas with ours. Also directing with the three of us (Folkert and I as a duo + Rocky), plus having Winona Ryder on set, plus all these stunts, plus all the things that go wrong on a day. We had real fun synthesizing this world into something that felt very Playstaytion 2 code americana cartoonesque Tex Avery type world." - Director @simonbecks_

Directors @simonbecks_ and @folkert.verdoorn talk about how they partnered with A$AP Rocky to make one of his wildest music videos yet.

It’s still pretty early to call it, but in the words of this week’s Feature Video artist @asaprocky , the clip for ‘Punk Rocky’ could be “ VIDEO OF THE FUCCKIN YEAR!!!🔥”
The video for this psych-rock inspired track has been directed by A$AP Rocky himself, alongside Folkert Verdoorn and Simon Becks (now collectively referred to as The Three Musketeers), and features a star-studded cast including Winona Ryder, Danny Elfman, Thundercat, and Rocky’s cousin A$AP Nast.
Five out of six of Rocky’s upcoming album DON’T BE DUMB’s alter egos are brought to life for this music clip, with Rocky himself portraying GR1M, Tommy Revenge as RUGAHAND, Thoto as BABUSHKA BOI, the Williams twins as SHIRTHEAD, and DUMMY appearing alongside them. Although we never quite know what to expect from Rocky, it’s pretty clear that ‘Punk Rocky’ plays a key role in the narrative of his first album in almost eight years (and we’re keen to see how the rest of the tale unfolds…).
Folkert and Simon say that they couldn’t really fathom Winona Ryder being on set until she was really there, explaining “we talked about Beavis and Butt-Head, her punk-rock days when she was younger (showed us some pictures when she shaved her head when she was younger and told us about the re-union on set with her life long friend Danny Elfman who she knew even before the Tim Burton collabs. And besides that she really got into it. There’s so much happening in her head that we really wanted to give her the space to make the role her own.”

“He told us he preferred working with duos because it shows you are able to collaborate and that is what brought us together.” 🎬
Folkert Verdoorn & Simon Becks are the co-directing duo behind @asaprocky ’s music video for “Punk Rocky”, directing alongside the Perfect cover star. We caught up with the duo to chat about their process, reminisce about Winona Ryder’s old punk days, and discuss what it’s like to work with Rocky himself.

We welcome Simon Becks.
Simon Becks is an award-winning director celebrated for his razor-sharp dark humor, surreal world-building, and stories that are equal parts unsettling and hilarious. With his distinct, uncompromising vision, Simon has rapidly emerged as one of the most distinctive new voices in contemporary filmmaking. He recently won Gold at the Cannes Young Director Award, swept the ADCN Awards with three Gold and one Bronze Lamp, and took home both Best Director and the Grand Prix for Best Music Video at the Berlin Music Video Awards; cementing his status as the wild card to watch.
Graduating top of his class from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Fine Art, Simon’s roots in visual arts reverberate through every frame he creates. His work is known for its immersive, hyper-specific worlds that blend the beautiful, the grotesque, and the darkly funny. Whether drawn from his own strange cravings, half-remembered monsters, or fleeting moments of everyday life flipped on their head, Simon’s vision always explores the deeply cinematic through the lens of the absurd.
Balancing deadpan wit with meticulously composed visuals, Simon’s work becomes a tightrope act of contradictions. The grotesque becomes intimate, monsters feel human, and the weird slowly starts to feel comfortable. He invites you to laugh through the discomfort; or unexpectedly empathize with the odd one out.
The result is a filmic voice that feels wholly original: at once familiar and deeply uncanny.
Welcome, Simon!
