HAPPY ILLMATIC DAY!! 30 Years Huh?? This transports me straight back to simpler times, when all I had to worry about was Tryna make money to buy more records, practice and jump up in a Boogie Bunch and Rampage dance!!! I remember going to Solar Records in Brixton tube station the week ILLMATIC dropped (there really was a record shop in the tube station. Big up Zed, wherever you are my man!!) Young NaSir was the man we were all waiting for. Since hearing him in 91 on Main Source’s Live At The Barbecue and MC Serch’s Back To The Grill Again in 92, Some saw him as the second coming of the God EmCee Rakim Allah!! Then we heard Halftime from the Zebrahead soundtrack and his debut was one of the most anticipated of that year. Even with heavy competition from Notorious Big, Big L, O.C., GangStarr, Jeru, OutKast, The Beatnuts, Craig Mack, Common Sense, Redman, Keith Murray, Pete Rock & CL Smooth and Method Man’s debut album to only name a few. Truly one of the best years for Hip Hop. If I’m not mistaken, this was the 1st Hip Hop album that had multiple name brand producers DJ Premier, Large Professor, Q Tip, Pete Rock and L.E.S. Highly anticipated and it didn’t disappoint. The shit was a masterpiece. Last year, I had the absolute honour of DJing for NaS at the KOKO & Hennessey official after party for NaS and Wu Tang Clan’s NY State of Mind tour. What a way to kick off the 50 years of Hip Hop celebrations, with my trusty Pioneer Rev 7 controller holding me down. Magical night, bucket list moment!! Happy Illmatic day!! This was an AMAZING project to be part of. It was my honour to contribute mixes alongside man like @Beatamaxx to celebrate The Music Is Black Mixtape (100 years of Black UK music & artists).
