It is located in a wide Atlantic bay, in northern Mauritania, near the border with Western Sahara. For decades, especially since the 1980s, hundreds of fishing boats, cargo ships and industrial boats were abandoned there. Many shipowners preferred to pay bribes or simply leave the ships in the bay rather than assume the high cost of scrapping. It is estimated that more than 300 rusty ships accumulated, creating a very peculiar landscape: half-sunken hulls, metal skeletons and remains floating or stranded in the sand. The wreck lies near Delisha Bay on the island’s northeastern coast and became a well-known stranded ship in the region.  The tanker reportedly carried thousands of tons of oil products when it stranded, raising fears of pollution and damage to Socotra’s coral reefs and marine ecosystem. Environmental groups and local officials later warned that residual fuel and leaking materials from the deteriorating hull could still threaten the coastline.  The ship, built in Japan in 1985 and previously sailing under other names, had become badly deteriorated before the accident. Origin and early use • Built in 1912 in the Russian Empire. • It was a river passenger vessel, designed to navigate rivers such as the Volga. • It was named after Prince Pyotr Bagration, a famous Russian general from the Napoleonic Wars. Period in Crimea • Over time, it ceased operating as an active means of transport. • It was moved to the coast of Crimea, near Yalta. • There, it was abandoned and ran aground near the shore, becoming something of a “ghost ship.”

It was used to work in the waters of the Dead Sea and to support the coastal scientific center. The vessel operated for years until the shoreline began to erode faster than expected. The sea receded, and cracks and gaps appeared in the water. In 2022, the center was declared unsafe and evacuated. The boat was towed away from the shore and abandoned in a place that was impossible to reach. In the trunk, is the ship’s log, with the last entry: “2/27/22, departure at 9:10 am, two crews, two passengers, towed from the shore.” Apparently, this was the last time it was placed in a conservation area. The Tresta Star, flying the flag of Mauritius, ran aground at Pointe du Tremblet after suffering an engine failure while fleeing the intense tropical cyclone Batsirai, which was approaching Mauritius and Réunion Island. The accident occurred after the port authorities of Port Louis asked the captain of the Tresta Star to move out to open sea. The Chinese company Lianyungang Dali Underwater Engineering and Polygreen were hired for the salvage operation. These are not shipwrecks, but rather abandoned vessels, possibly linked to the February 27 (27F) earthquake. By the way… The 27F tsunami in Chile was triggered by a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake on February 27, 2010. It struck the central and southern coasts, causing severe flooding, destroying infrastructure, and displacing thousands of people.
