May 5th is a day to honour and remember our missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, transgender and two spirit people. - Indigenous Women (girls +) murdered 10x higher than all other ethnicities. - Murder is the 3rd leading cause of death for Indigenous Women (Centers for Disease Control). - More than 4 out of 5 Indigenous Women have experienced violence (84.3%) (National Institute of Justice Report). - More than half Indigenous Women experience sexual violence (56.1%). - More than half Indigenous Women have been physically abused by their intimate partners (55.5 percent). - less than half of Indigenous Women have been stalked in their lifetime (48.8 percent). - Indigenous Women are 1.7 times more likely than Anglo-American women to experience violence. - Indigenous Women are 2xs more likely to be raped than Anglo-American white women. - Murder rate of Indigenous Women is 3xs higher than Anglo-American women. This food centre serves more than 300 meals A DAY! 77.1% of children in Inuit Nunangat are living in food-insecure households (Statistics Canada, 2022). Which is some of the worst food insecurity rates in the country!!!! Food prices are getting higher and higher, especially in the north. That’s why I’m so glad that community food centres like Qajuqturvik exist. Historically, this comparison has reduced women to fragile, ornamental figures admired through the male gaze. In Flora, the flower becomes a site of resistance, authorship, and re-birth. Each woman is both the subject and the sto-ryteller, embodying a beauty rooted not in delica-cy, but in resilience, memory, and self-possession. Growing up, I rarely saw women who looked like me portrayed as beautiful. Through this work, I create the images I once searched for: women of color not as muses, but as mirrors; not as decoration, but as presence.
