Follow along as I mass in a black bear head in solid clay on a pipe armature! 🐻
I sculpt each piece solid to about 75% completion, then I cut it up, hollow it, and reassemble it. Massing in is the fastest part of the process. This bear took me six hours to mass in, but it will take me much longer to hollow, reassemble, and detail it!

Introducing 2026 Montana Clay Tour guest artist Shelsea Dodd!
Shelsea’s work primarily investigates feminist and LGBTQ/queer issues, human/animal relationships, and the parallels she perceives between the two. Her work has been shown nationally and she has taught and completed residencies both across the US and abroad.
In 2025 she opened Goldhorn Studios, a collective studio space and gallery in downtown Helena, MT, with her wife, potter Sam Momeyer. They live in Helena with their dog and two cats.
