There are a lot of crazy things I want to do and see in my life, but there’s a chance that this will be the most remarkable photo I ever take.
The reason for that lies in the amount of circumstances that had to align for this shot to be taken. With the acceleration of impeding pressure on Kenyan ecosystems, it is likely that a tusker of this size and grandeur will never come again- let alone one this gentle.. And to be in such close contact with a wild elephant that has aged so gracefully (53 years) was something I surely did not take for granted.

An absolute joy and a privilege to accompany a great mentor of mine, John Banovich, as he prepares for an upcoming commission. So much wisdom to be soaked in each day, so many lessons to be learned.
You better belive there will be some elephant sightings in the Max Morris portfolio coming soon.. but for now, I’m headed north, to spend the next month living with the Samburu.

Matsés river boats… my favorite way to see the Amazon.
To move around the Javari River, from one Matsés village to the next, or one fishing hole to another, we traveled in traditional dugout canoes.
Carved from one massive hollowed out tree, the boats are made using nothing but an axe and a machete.
While much is changing deep in the Amazon, some ancient crafts persist.
Moose paddle #1 - available
The first piece in my partnership with @montanatuff.co
I really enjoyed the process of prepping the paddle for work and painting on a new surface. On to the next 🫎

A new pencil sketch, commissioned by a man who saw my work in Nashville.
Lately I’ve been feeling the pull to return to Samburu and buy my friend Simuni a cow for all the inspiration he’s given me. So many works of art from one muse.
To me, he represents everything a Samburu warrior stands for… grounded strength, agility, and a quiet confidence in the way he moves through the world. The epitome of embodied masculinity.

Some exciting new projects in the works…
🫎
In collaboration with @montanatuff.co I’ll be making western/wildlife paintings on big moose paddles and designing elk shed belt buckles. Some exciting new canvases to try out.
I’m stoked to be back working with some of my long time friends and diversifying my art output
Taking a mini hydro plane over the Amazon
⛅️ 🌳
After our time with the Matses tribe, we took a 7 hour boat ride down the Javari river. Ending up in the tiny town of Angamos, Peru, we soon realized we were stranded. The only way out would be chartering a small hydro plane to take us to Iquitos.
With the unpredictable weather that had been rolling through, only one of the pilots was willing to take the flight. We were warned that he had 3 failed water landings under his belt.. But decided to take the chance anyways.
There is nothing more beautiful nor humbling than looking down on a thick green forest stretching as far as the eyes can see. We were all secretly calculating how many days of jungle trekking it would take to get us out of he did crash again.
🌚 Night time in the Amazon
As dusk falls, the jungle comes to life, and the air begins to buzz with new sounds. There is a thick energy all around, as nocturnal creatures come out of hiding, and the spirits of ancestors are invoked inside malocas. This is when the real ceremonies are held, when medicine is taken, and when ancient stories are told with deep reverence and intention. This is the time when the line between myth and reality is blurred, and there is no choice but to surrender.
