The Soul Selects Their Own Society - exchange exhibition with @prcboston
Behind VA Shadows is excited to collaborate with the Photographic Resource Center for a special exhibition hosted at the PRC gallery.
We invite artists to submit work responding to the theme interiority — how art can explore individuality, private identity, and intimacy while acknowledging the public systems we live within.
How do we understand the spaces inside ourselves?
Does your work celebrate warm homes and close relationships, or reflect the tension of setting private life aside in order to function in society?
What helps someone encounter their interior self?
Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme expansively — figurative, architectural, abstract, documentary, or conceptual approaches are all welcome.
Submission Guidelines
• Work must include photography or lens-based media (mixed media incorporating photography is welcome)
• A limited amount of video work may be selected
• Artwork containing violence or nudity will not be considered
Eligibility
Anyone may apply.
Priority will be given to BIPOC artists and museum workers.
Friends who currently work—or have worked—in museums, galleries, or art institutions are especially encouraged to apply. If you are outside the arts but resonate with the theme, you are also welcome to join our adventure.
Deadline:
May 1, 2026 — 11:59 PM
Fees:
There is never an application fee for our open calls.
Participation is volunteer-based and community focused.

10 days away at the @clark_mfa residency brought so many loud and joyous moments, paired with moments of quiet and contemplation. A beautiful mix of friendship and community, observation and introspection. Looking forward to what comes next 🌀🌀
The glowing warmth I felt this week will stay with me for a long time.
Spending 10 days at Mass MoCA for the @clark_mfa residency with friends, art, ideas, and light was the best possible way to start the year. I’m so thankful 🤍
(P.S. I’ve been incubating all semester so here’s a glimpse of what I’ve been working on!)
