1.5 weeks until tour rehearsals for Caught In Between! ✈️🌏
As I juggle my roles between Producer and Lead Artist, I’ve been reflecting on the beginnings of CIB.
When I started creating this work, I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to explore and how the show would look, which (surprise) shifted through experimentation with my team and as I delved deeper into my writing. There was a lot of uncertainty, frustration, determination to make the perfect first solo work. I questioned my capabilities and wondered what I was doing all this for, forgetting (just for a split second) the reasons why I wanted to tell this story in the first place.
CIB centres around my upbringing between Malaysia and Australia - the places I grew up, my friends and family, some of whom can be seen in glimpses throughout the show. This work celebrates them. It is also a small step in representing the multi-faceted Asian-Australian community I am so proud to be a part of.
Here is a little insight of what it was like in and out of the room during the making of this work - the trials, errors, and laughter. A throwback to the early days, when we were still working with a huge white photography paper as our backdrop (courtesy of Carclew), which we carried around, mended and taped back together after every use. Happy to say that we’ve since upgraded to fabric!
Our development/rehearsals jumped between Carclew, MakeSpace at ActNow Theatre and finally GTS, where we presented a sell-out and award-winning Fringe season followed by a one-night-only special. Now, in just a few weeks, with the support of
@vberry_70 and
@keira.sound , I will be revisiting this work and sharing it with new audiences in Sydney and Melbourne.
I am deeply grateful for all the support I’ve received for CIB:
@carclew ,
@adlfringe ,
@helpmannacademy and
@nexusarts through funding,
@actnowtheatre ,
@goodwoodtheatreandstudios and
@vitalstatistix_ through in-kind support, my wonderful Singaporean/Australian creative team, and everyone who saw this work during its SA presentations 💛
Come catch us at
