I had no clue that @officialfrandrescher admired #FrederickDouglass when I decided to wear a shirt with his image to the #sagaftra rally... I had owned it for a few yrs...just like I had cherished his "quarters" in my jewelry box🪙...because I had cited him in many of my college papers 📄 that deconstructed the SOCIAL FABRICATION OF THE IDEOLOGY OF RACE....to my "new acquaintances" this may sound abstract...but though I had a relatively privileged life. I faced (public & vulgar) discrimination against my nationality for a years. The first week in a new country I was even punched in the head🥊...but I don't mention it often because the context of my comfortable life would insult the sacrifices of my grandparents who had to battle WAR. It's just a chapter in my long story. I started working in film and TV as a Production Assistant on corporate videos, then moved onto reality shows as they came through Pittsburgh. It was low-paying and thankless work. Most of the time we found a way to laugh about the whole thing, but me and my fellow PAs would often lament how badly we needed a union. We needed more protections, and we were fed up with the low wages. Fortunately, commercial PAs have recently chartered a new union, IATSE Local 111, otherwise known as @productionworkersguild . What better way to celebrate than to support our friends in @sagaftra at the strike line at Warner Brothers next Wednesday? Also joining us is @productionassistantsunited which is working hard to organize film and TV PAs. If you were ever kicked down as a PA, or are living through it now, come out and make some new rebel friends!
Yesterday was incredible, I'm honored to be a part of this movement. I couldn't have imagined the turnout we had. About 1000 people showed up in solidarity. It was also the first time I heard this song, sung beautifully by strike captain DW. It was amazing to hear while watching everyone on the line. I'm union proud.
I have met amazing people and have made life-long friends.
