An exciting announcement - @dr_alessandra_pino and I are working on a new book ‘The River Remembers: A Gothic Voyage through Forgotten Histories of the Thames’ - a unique history of the city told through the shifting waters of its river. The book draws from our research for Serve it Forth festival in 2025, featuring disasters, whales, eels and memento mori. Thank you so much to everyone who joined our @serveitforthfest Xmas bonus! I had so much fun, and I loved every second of it and I think @dr_neil_buttery and @mrssbilton did too!We wandered through the festive foods of Charles Dickens, explored the wonderfully eerie world of Icelandic Christmas folklore and tradition, and even turned to our favourite Christmas food- cheese- but in its darker, more mysterious form: divination with @kitchenwitchjb . The discussion and questions at the end were brilliant too. It’s the first day of the Icelandic Yule Lad visitations!I discussed their antics with folklorist Dagrún Osk Jónsdóttir at last night’s @serveitforthfest Christmas special. Dagrún wrote the fascinating Ghosts, Trolls and The Hidden People for @reaktionbooksThe Yule Lads each have their own penchants for specific foods or habits (some less savoury than others). They leave presents in kids’ shoes in the 13 days leading up to Christmas. The naughty kids get a potato instead!Judging from the size of this spud, I’ve been very naughty indeed. #yulelads#iceland#folklore#christmas#christmasstories#serveitforthfest#mrsbilton

Today is the feast of Saint Nicholas!In some parts of Europe Saint Nicholas visits good children on this day to deliver presents (often left in a shoe). In eastern France he is accompanied by Père Fouettard (father whipper) who lashes those who have been bad.
