Steeped firmly in the genre of silent film, Sequinette Jaynesfield’s 16mm and Super-8 films reflect neither the slapstick of Buster Keaton, the underdog pathos of Chaplin, nor the in-camera tricks of either, yet harken back to the 1920s through sheer, unbridled, queen glamour. Marked by a cast of recurrent characters, they’re rife with speakeasies, painted ladies, and Ragtime – but queer AF. Set design and costumes take center stage in these filmic renderings of queens, queens, queens, from gestural one-liners like RACK FOCUS to absurdist pseudo-John-Waters-inspired camp narratives like FANCY PHONE NUMBERS. These by-any-means-necessary productions stem from the heart of queer, nightlife community, to deliver a “by us, for us” vibe that is incomparable.
