The AI doesn’t know how to make them eat properly and I’m ok with that.

Hi there! Lots of new people coming to my profile these days so I thought I'd introduce myself. My name's Beth. My apartment is in Montreal and my studio is in Mexico City, which makes for a really long commute (or a life of stress, instability and financial precarity haha lololol). I like nice watercolour paper, cheap wigs, and face swaps, and my non-DALLE art can be found over at @bethisms . Here's a bunch of selfies and such that I had on hand that I fed to the DALLE machine. Nice to meet you all!

This is something I’ve been meaning to write about for a long time now, but I never quite knew how to articulate it (because we all know that social media is where nuance goes to die). Some of you have probably wondered why I haven’t posted any of my weirdo sentientmuppetfactory content for a long time. The short answer is, “Well, it’s complicated.” Aligning oneself as “pro-AI” or “anti-AI” feels reductive here, but the rise of slop and ethical and ecological implications of AI usage have all started to weigh down on me and I struggled to continue to have my name associated with AI as its place in our lives became increasingly dystopian. Additionally, as a visual artist whose practice predates my usage of AI tools, I felt like this experience broke my brain, made me doubt my own abilities, fizzled up my already minuscule attention span. This is not a forever good-bye; I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing here with this account and my creations. AI isn’t going anywhere, and I still believe we need to develop an AI literacy and that artists have an opportunity to use this powerful tool to challenge conventional modes of thinking because the bad guys are already having a heyday with it. But in the meantime, enjoy this article by @chris.hampton for @cbcarts who gave me the space to describe all my complicated feelings and how they fed in to my latest show Autoeffigies at @mcbridecontemporain . I’ll put a link to the article in my bio for those interested. We also hear from the wonderful @dissociative_dreams who is making powerful work on here in a way that is authentic to them. You can always find me making my analog weirdo art over at @bethisms if that floats your boat. Sending much love to you all 🩷

One of the four videos featured in 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙤𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙚𝙨 by Beth Frey, currently on display at the gallery, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the artist at work. This grouping of short clips reveals how Frey inserts herself into her videos– using her body against a green screen to develop a process of body-collage or digital puppetry, animating her drawings imperfectly through her own movements. This work culminates in the video piece 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 (the exhibition’s title piece), in which her created creatures—also embodiments of herself—build an effigy of “The Artist,” a cartoonized version of Frey that collapses the boundary between maker and made. Playful in nature, Frey’s videos’ cartoonish energy mirrors the tactility of her works on paper. Here, the body reasserts itself—stitched into the image and leaving traces of lived experience within the digital space. @bethisms @sentientmuppetfactory #bethfrey #mcbridecontemporain
