The making of Spirefell
Bringing Spirefell to life as a LEGO model was so much fun. It came with a lot of challenges…first and foremost the challenge of realizing someone else’s creative concept. @senlinyuwrites had developed an amazing and daunting setting in their novel, Alchemised, and we knew we needed to do it justice when building this model.
The model also had to be modular…able to be deconstructed, packed, shipped, and easily reassembled multiple times by multiple people as this will travel to several cons and shows. So it needed to be built with this in mind, and also be sturdy enough to handle lots of transport and handling.
Here are a few progress pics showing the general process of how this LEGO model came together…
1. Final assembly

12. All nine sections of base connected. The grey “footprints” indicate where each building will sit.

15. The footprint for each structure is one plate lower than the surrounding ground work. There are no studs connecting the structures with the base (except for the gate posts). They stay in place because of the edges of the “well” they sit in.
16. On display with final artwork at @delreybooks booth at Emerald City Comic Con. Final size: 4.5’ W x 4.5’ D x 3’ H; 58,000 LEGO pieces; 155 pounds
