In just over a week we’re heading for Newcastle, as the first meeting of Music Video Preservation Society at the marvellous Tyneside Cinema, the jewel of independent cinema in the North East, takes place next Thursday, May 14th.
And we are delighted to announce a special guest for this special show - the wonderful Semera Khan. Semera is a real VIP of British music videos with a strong connection to the area, having masterminded and directed music videos for one of the UK’s biggest artists, who also happens to be a proper local hero - Sam Fender.
Semera is Director of Creative at Polydor Records, a video commissioner and creative director on music video campaigns for The Rolling Stones, Lana Del Rey, The 1975, Michael Kiwanuka, James Blake and many more. And she has been working closely with Sam Fender since he signed to the label in 2018, commissioning and overseeing all of his videos from then on.
It adds up to being a very powerful body of work with several of Sam’s videos filmed in and around his hometown of North Shields. As well as working with heavyweight directors like Philip Barantini (Adolescent) and top actors like Stephen Graham and Andrew Scott, Semera has also directed one or two herself - including the riotous Howden Aldi Death Queue, featuring Robson Green.
It’s very exciting to welcome Semera to talk about the videos she’s made with Sam Fender with MVPS host David Knight - and to show several of them on the wonderful big screen at the Tyneside.
And that’s not all. There will be more classic videos that Semera has commissioned, plus a range of work from at least five decades of music video history, from the iconic to the ingenious to less well-known gems. And more local heroes featured too.
It’s going to be a very special night, celebrating the art and culture of music videos on the big screen and tickets are on sale now at the Tyneside Cinema box office - link in the bio.
