One thing we’re known for around these parts (aside from Jazz LEGENDS aplenty & horrible sandwiches w/ fries on them (🤣) is RECORD STORES! We have more wrecka stows per capita than a city twice our size. & hidden gems that exist within the nooks & crannies of said shops. I copped a crib back in 2005 just a stones throw from one (@atticrecordstore ) & grew up in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh where another one (@jerrys_records ) resides. I even dabbled in the rekkid purveying biz (w/ a little help from my friends) w/ several iterations of our beloved 720 Records (hence my name) that added another shop to the list from 1998-2015. Needless to say, I gotta habit. One would say a completist, if you will. Addict? Ok..there I said it! So a few weeks back, directly after several hours of providing music to the masses on TWITCH, @moeknowsbest met up with me at the abode & we proceeded to embark on a short jaunt across the 40th Street Bridge so he could shadow me on one of these vinyl expeditions. We chatted about iconic DJs that have shopped at the aforementioned Attic & Jerry’s Records after we’ve jointly rocked sets here in the Burgh. Other cities respective shops. & my digging mentor @buscrates , who has been putting me on to gems since the mid 90s. His knowledge reigns supreme. There is a certain cathartic release that comes from spending hours hunkered in a record store. A glorious combo meal of sights, sounds, & dialogue. The jackets pop in full Technicolor. Bringing copious amounts of light to the gloomiest of days. I always feel exponentially better upon returning (box in hand) from a good dig. This shot was captured on the very day of my 50th revolution (☀️), two weeks ago. May 16, 1973-West Penn Hospital-Pittsburgh, PA. Faye Levy (R.I.P.) gave birth to her only son. My party (just a little sumthin-sumthin) followed shortly thereafter & was a MEGABLAST, to say the least. Another roaring round of mucho appreciation to ALL that brought in such a milestone w/ moi. In case you’re wondering ,I’ve taken the last week + to pause all musical pursuits & reflect on my last half-a-century of being. This long overdue downtime proved quite cathartic. Invigorating. Reset button is fully activated. A cache of quality tunes are queued up for your listening pleasure. Versions are primed for polarizing dialogue. This Is A Journey Into Sound… A proper video encapsulation of said sonic expedition showcasing the vast array of genres that I presented (on wax) in Miami at @danteshifi a few weeks back. The most delightful sounds of @jimettarose , @tallblackguyproductions , @chakakhan , ear dis, @wallenbink , @drugs_beats , @realpeterock @therealclsmooth , @boogalooassassins , @erro44 . & that’s just a small sampling of what I ran through in my 2.5 hour set of nothing but sureshots. If I may take a cue from the GOD Nasir…”I woke up early on my born day; I’m 53, it’s a blessin.’ Even after rocking for 16+ hours yesterday (w/ lots of aid from my friends), I was up at the breakadawn this mornin… filled with joy, appreciation, vigor, and lots of love. Couldn’t have imagined ringing in my earth strong w/out the family present & with the right musical backdrop. We went until after 1am last night & closed out with the very apropos Angela Bofill tune “Under The Moon and Over the Sky.” Danke to my guest selectors for giving the DJ a break for a spell… @beesusthedj + @iammissher + @musicspasms + @heyyriggs + @buscrates + @djepik . My friends @zo3hree5ive + @ianwallaceproductions for chopping it on screen with me for bit w/ me, & OF COURSE the Supa Mod Squad (❤️❤️❤️) for more than I can put into words. My Berry Bunch massive for always coming through (day after day, stream after stream) for 6 + years. Y’all (collectively) are the SHIZ! Not to mention the countless raids we received throughout the day. Too many to tag but super salute y’all! Our ARIES gang celebration continued today with a 4-Hour Herbie (86th Born-Day) journey of a progrum. So of course I had to pull out Pittsburgh’s very own Frank Cunimondo’s version of HH’s “Chameleon” on his highly sought after Sagittarius release. If you see a copy out in the wild…GRAB IT! Great rekkid from end to end. Could have rocked for several days solely on Mr. Hancock’s discography over the last (almost) 60 years from straight ahead joints with Miles to his constant movements & so explorations, but only so much time to do so.
