I had an amazing and super productive time during my #rewildingcultures residency at @cultivamoscultura . I spent loads of time in the field exploring the lush and varied soundscape and geology of the Alentejo landscape. Thanks @cultivamoscultura for the great support and company! I hope some of you get to hear the 4 channel piece which is currenlty in the making. It is a composition layering acustic sounds with recordings of the EM field throughout the spectrum from VLF to gamma radiation.

During his residency Erich conducts experiments towards more-than-human sound-scapes. More-than-human sound-scapes are sonic observations that invites us to pause and listen to a situated soundscape that taps into the presence of that which is within and beyond the human sensory capabilities. A soft blend of environmental sounds mixes with the extra-sensorial, scaling earth’s signals to the human gamut. Irregular seismic murmurations are mingling with the sound of birds, the wind, and human activities; these sounds are coupling with radio signals of telluric and atmospheric currents, the rays of perpetual radioactive decay and cosmic radiation into a more-than-human saturation.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to the 'Spectral Landscapes' exhibition opening last Saturday at @muu_helsinki . It was a wonderful afternoon! The exhibition presents three distinct but strongly connected installations: Spectral Landscapes, Landscape Machines, and Anthropomemes. Together they form a series of observations and observatories that explore radioactivity within the landscape. The exhibition will run until 17. November. In case you want me around when you visit, just send me a PM, I am happy to join. I also would like to express my gratitude to all the people and institutions that made these works and the exhibition possible: @koneensaatio #AccelerateFinland: @artsatcern / @ulla_capsula (art-science-nature) / @saastamoinenfoundation @taikegram @kulttuurirahasto @bioartsociety @muu_helsinki @projektatol (Marko Peljhan, Uros Veber, Tjaša Pogačar, Valter Udovičić, Jože Zajec) & @kons_platform @plonk.studio / Till Bovermann Laura Beloff, Myrsky Beloff, Jyrki Autio, Leena and Oula Valkeapää and many more. Thanks for the opening images @raajakko and @livinglalisaloca

For those of you in Helsinki, I would like to warmly welcome you to the opening of my exhibition SPECTRAL LANDSCAPES on Saturday 2nd November 13 - 16h at @muu_helsinki . I am really looking forward to this, as I am showing works for the first time in Finland, that I have been developing over the last couple of years. There is a bit more to read about it on the Muu page https://muu.fi/events-and-exhibitions/erich-berger-spectral-landscapes/

On Thursday this week, the fifth iteration of SOLU Dialogues invites you into dialogue with Erich Berger and his ongoing engagement with deep time, deep futures and the nuclear contemporary. 🪨☢️ "While the world around the landfill is busy and keeps moving, the movement of Boršt is undesirable, as it would lead to the spilling of its contaminated heritage. Boršt is kept in a state of assisted stasis and is under continuous observation as part of a long-term stewardship program. Every deviation from the zero state raises concern. It is an absurd machine – a landscape machine. Though the mining has ceased, the machinic continues to operate in this landscape. It is a machine that does not carry out beneficial work. It does not produce anything; it only indebts the present and deep future. The world would prefer to have it slip from memory and forget it into non-existence. However, the earth’s processes which labour on the landfill, demand that the Boršt machine keep going in a relentless working of forces." Welcome to SOLU Space from 18:00 onwards! Last weekend, I set up a More-Than-Human listening station during the Feral Field Sympoesium @feral_festival , organised by collective.uroboros.design @uroborofestival on Vartiosaari in Helsinki. It is a sonic observatory that blends and augments what we can perceive with our sensory faculties with that which is beyond our sonic perception. The seaside weekend sounds mingle with infra and ultrasounds, the movements of the earth and wind, the natural radioactive decay, the electrical storm of the inland weather front, and the ubiquitous data transmissions around us ...

Close to the Finnish nuclear reactors Olkiluoto 1-3, a geologic repository for nuclear waste named Onkalo, meaning 'hidden place', is being built. Onkalo will soon receive the first spent fuel rods which will be buried in large copper cylinders 430m below ground. During a field trip last week with nuclear culture researchers and artists we were introduced to this multigenerational project and could visit the cavern and burial chambers. Most strikingly the project is completely unaware/ignorant of its wider cultural implications and is only seen and communicated as a triumph in engineering mastering nuclear waste. In turn, this triumph is used to justify the continuous use of nuclear power. Images: 1) arrival at ONKALO 2) schematics of the underground facility 3) copper and steel disposal canister 4) the visiting group in the cavern, led by @ele.carpenter , with @susan_schuppli , eglerind, @mr_wrestle and Erich Berger 5) the Olkiluoto nuclear reactors 1-3 6) multi-modal field recording setup 7) the hum of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant (isolated with software)

I am thankful to have participated in the exhibition ARTIFICIAL GENESIS: 30.9. – 3.12.2023 at @schafhof_art_forum with my installation Spectral Landscapes - Palkiskuru and to be in the company of Ilkka Halso, Barbara Herold & Florian Huth, Tamás Waliczky and Jeremy Wood. The group exhibition on the annual theme Nature↔Data explores the era of the Anthropocene through artistic means. The term describes a new geochronological age in which humans have become one of the most important influencers of biological, geological, and atmospheric processes on Earth. The Artificial Genesis exhibition takes on the complexity of the subject with unusual and creative artistic perspectives that push the boundaries of the expected. It is a reminder of the importance of understanding and preserving nature, of ecology and sustainability, and at the same time a tribute to the imagination and beauty of human creativity.
